I had a possibility to take a partial break from my office work analyzing the stock market (maybe you’ll never be totally out) and make an application to an adult student. In January 2023 I was accepted to an adult  class of forestry in a professional school. Yes, a professional school after two academic degrees. I needed more floor level knowledge of forestry to run properly the forest farming business as described earlier. Managing the process is running, but when the business depends mainly of the nature, living plants and environment, more knowledge is needed.

Now, one and half years are behind and the last half year of studies is beginning in mid August. This class is targeted to farmers and forest farmers, who usually have to continue their farm, but may have worked in other professions.

We have learned various tree felling techniques, even in difficult places like near buildings, roads and power lines. We have also learned to use the clearing saw which is the main tool for a modern forest farmer: preparing space around baby trees by removing long grass, bushes and other unwanted plants.

This summer “holiday” is intended for a summer landscaping project. I’m restoring an old meadow in my own forest farm which will be ready in mid August when the school begins. Taken photos before, during the various work phases and doing a PowerPoint slide show. Here both our study material and the internet will help, but the project will also need physical work, sweat and tired muscles; this has been really good for an office worker. After the physical work comes documentation: what has been done, which tools and methods used and why. It has been nice to wake up early 6am in the morning, take tools in the car, drive to the forest, having breakfast in the nature and begin working. Watching and listening when the nature begins to wake up.
This experience has been worth every drop of sweat.

In December 2013 I had to make a decision, to continue or not, family's part-time forest farming business which had been in our family since 1583, now 441 years. I bought the business from my uncle and father and had to learn how to manage a business quite different from the stock market and technical analysis of stock trends. We are running this business based on the ESG principles:
1. We are a member of the local Forest Owners' Association and our forest is PEFC certified. We follow government's regulations, norms and recommendations of sustainable forestry.
2. We use local family businesses and workers as subcontractors.
3. We pay recommended salaries and governmental fees.
70% of our timber goes to local sawmills (less than 200km / 125miles away) to be processed for furniture and construction material. 25% goes to raw material for pulp industry and 5% (residual) is chipped and used to replace heating oil to heat up the local school, elderly home and other public buildings.
In 2019 we planted 1.000 birch trees and 1.800 Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees, in 2022 we planted 8.550 Norway spruce trees, in 2023 we planted 1.440 birch trees and 2024 we’ll plant about 6.000 Norway spruce trees to replace the logged ones.
In this way, we are using the centuries old traditions of good forestry combined with modern technology, business management and sustainable principles.

Part-time forest farmer

Finnish Shareholders' Association

I was asked in November 2019 to "clean up" the Finnish Shareholders' Association (30.000 members) as it had been driven to a poor condition by the previous managing director. A financially sound non-profit organization had been driven to near bankruptcy in just 9 months. Most of the staff had resigned and 1 of 9 was left. My mission was to avoid bankruptcy, negotiate broken business connections, hire more staff and be a mentor to the next managing director. All this had to be done without any interruptions to the member services. Then hit the coronavirus and we had to cancel all the education courses and quickly convert them to webinars. I closed the office 16th of March 2020 and recommended the staff of four to work remotely. I cut all unnecessary costs by going through every invoice, even the cleaning contract of the office was terminated to save money. In the meantime I succeeded to sell numerous "advertisement packs" to the Finnish banks and stock broker companies to introduce themselves in our web magazine viisasraha.fi ( translates as "Wise Money", take a look at www.viisasraha.fi  -I would say, it's not behind international competitors). As a new managing director was hired in September and I was as a mentor for him a few months, I decided that my job is almost done. My last work was to re-negotiate all the membership benefits for 2021 using the network that I had built during the 13 years. Now I can say: Mission Completed, the Finnish Shareholders' Association is saved !
I was rewarded with a Finnish Shareholders' Association Golden Medal for this work.
It's time to take care of my own investments: stocks, real estate and forest farm.
