It took a visa approval to remind me I haven’t truly switched off all year!!!

I finally received my visa and booked a few days away at the end of October.

A proper sunny beach holiday.

At the beginning of September, I made a commitment to myself, to move more, eat better, sleep better, and tend to my mindset.

No grand “wellness plan.” Just small, consistent shifts. And the difference has been… remarkable.

I’m calmer in meetings.
I pause before reacting.
I can see situations with more clarity instead of just rushing to fix them.

It made me realise how often we, as leaders, keep running on empty: thinking we’re holding everything together…when in truth, our teams feel exhaustion long before we do.

When we’re grounded, our decision-making sharpens.

Our empathy deepens.

And our teams feel it, in how we listen, respond, and lead.

Try leading a high-pressure team without it.

Because your people don’t leave because of workload.

They leave because they feel unseen, unheard, or undervalued.

Now emotional intelligence doesn’t mean you’re everyone’s therapist.

It means you know when to push, when to pause, and when to listen.

It’s what separates managers who survive…from leaders people actually follow.

What to do:

1. Phone off the table. Face down is not polite.
2. Airplane mode. Put it out of sight.
3. Morning rule. Partner before phone.
4. Dinner rule. Only one phone between you.
5. Client rule. Keep it in your bag.
6. Home rule. Do not carry it room to room.
7. Build the habit. Small reps beat willpower.

The aim is not to hear the words.
It is for people to feel heard.

One habit that instantly reduces conflict - anywhere!

Most arguments don’t escalate because people disagree.
They escalate because people 'don’t feel understood'.

This image hit me hard because it reminded me of something my teenage son once told me during an argument, “Will you even try to listen to what *I* have to say… and understand me?”

That one line shook me.
Because we, as parents, so often demand to be understood…
but forget that our children need the same emotional space.

Psychology is clear -
When people feel understood, the brain shifts from 'threat mode' to 'trust mode'.
Defensiveness drops.
Connection rises.
Communication becomes human again.

Whether it’s at home or at work, with teams or teenagers...

Understanding first isn’t being soft. It’s being smart.
It’s how relationships grow, not break.

Master Corporate Meetings with these 6 Shifts:  Bonus strategy inside!

You say you’re an open-minded leader.
But how often do you really try something new before deciding it’s not for you?

I went to the local fruit and veg market last weekend.
Rows of cauliflowers, deep purple, green, even yellow.

I found myself staring and thinking,
“Ooh… I’m not sure about that one.”

And I caught myself.
That tiny thought, “I’m not sure about that”, is exactly what happens at work, every single day.

When a team member suggests a new approach.
When someone’s style of communication feels unfamiliar.
When a new process challenges the way we’ve always done it.

Our instinct is to retreat to what we know.

To stick with the familiar colour of cauliflower, metaphorically speaking.

But:
Every breakthrough in leadership, innovation, or performance started with someone daring to choose the unfamiliar.

As leaders, our job isn’t to know it all, it’s to stay curious.

To try before we judge.
To lead from openness, not assumption.

So next time you feel that tiny resistance, pause, and ask yourself:

“What if this way is better…?”

What I heard from a new manager is, I thought “being across everything” made me responsible. It didn’t. It made me anxious and made my team dependent.”

Now, real leadership is letting go of the illusion that your presence is what keeps things together.

Because the true measure of leadership isn’t how your team behaves when you’re there, it’s how they rise when you’re not.

And yes, that takes courage.

To loosen the grip.
To trust that you’ve built something (and someone) stronger than your fear.
