I am a tenured University Research Chair and Full Professor with 20+ years of research and teaching experience in user experience (UX) design and research focused on gamification, human-computer interaction, and generative artificial intelligence (AI). My Ph.D. research was on the scientific measurement of UX in interactive entertainment. I direct a research group and a graduate degree program at the University of Waterloo, Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business. I'm also a solopreneur and online creator, helping early-career researchers to unlock their full potential.

I have written 300+ research papers (and counting), edited the major games user research book and several high-impact conference proceedings, started a top-tier academic conference series that is now a journal (CHI PLAY), and started companies for UX research and online training. My research programmes have been funded with millions of dollars over the past decade through joint funding from major companies and the Canadian government.

He had 100 pages of analysis and zero structure:

"I've been lost and floundering doing a lot of writing and analyzing documents."

That's what he told me on our first coaching call.

A social policy researcher studying housing impacts on health, education, and employment. Smart. Diligent. Drowning.

He had done the reading. He had done the data work. He had the results. But every time he sat down to write, the paper went sideways. Three months of effort with nothing publishable.

I've seen this pattern with dozens of my clients.

They mistake having material for having a paper.

Here's what was actually wrong:

1. No skeleton before writing

He was writing sections in whatever order felt right to him. That's not writing. That's journaling.

I gave him one protocol: Build a skeleton outline first.

Every section gets a one-sentence summary before you write a single paragraph.
• Introduction: why this matters, why now, how you studied it.
• Literature review: organized by themes, not authors.
• Methods, Results, Discussion: each with one clear purpose statement.

You can't get lost in a building that has a blueprint.

2. No paragraph architecture

His paragraphs were 400-word blocks with no internal logic.

I introduced PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Every paragraph starts with its claim, supports it with data, explains the significance, and links to what comes next.

Target: 100 to 250 words per paragraph. If it's longer, consider splitting it.

3. No strategy for discussing results

He had findings but couldn't connect them to the literature.

I gave him two moves: (1) show where your results confirm what others found and why that matters, (2) show where your results diverge and explain the conditions that caused the difference.

That's it. Confirm or diverge. Every Discussion paragraph follows one of those two patterns.

Within one coaching session, he had a complete paper roadmap, paragraph templates, and a discussion strategy he could apply to every future paper.

The research was always there. The architecture wasn't.
