I've been running my own businesses since I was 13 years old.

For the last decade, I've run On Purpose Projects - a custom web development agency partnering with women-owned agencies. We handle the complex technical work so our partners can focus on strategy, client relationships, and growth.

But somewhere along the way, something shifted.

The women I work with would call about a project, and we'd end up talking about something deeper. The exhaustion. The self-doubt. The way it feels to juggle everything and wonder if you're doing any of it right.

And I'd think: I know exactly what you mean.

Running an agency will never be easy. There will always be difficult conversations that dysregulate you. 
Decisions that push you out of your comfort zone. Moments that make you want to retreat.

You can wish for an easier path. But that won't change anything.

The only way forward is to get better at facing the things that dysregulate you. To accept that hitting your goals means doing hard things.

If you're stuck, it's most likely past trauma blocking you.

The level of your income, success, and growth will only expand to the level your nervous system can tolerate.

So how do you get better? How do you become capable of facing what dysregulates you?

You overcome your blocks by overcoming your trauma.

A day in the life of a female founder when your kid is home sick:

5:00 AM - Wake up to the sound of your daughter throwing up. Grab your laptop, set up camp on the couch beside her, and start mentally rehearsing how you'll pretend you're in a professional office during your 10 am sales call and not at the foot of your sick child's makeshift bed.

8:00 AM - Remember the other kids exist and need to get to school. You call an Uber because there's no way you're leaving the sick one alone to do drop-off. 

8:30 AM - She finally falls asleep. You tiptoe to the kitchen to make coffee, stepping over the dog, the discarded bucket, and three juice boxes. You open your laptop. Seventeen Slack messages. Your team needs decisions. You need caffeine.

10:00 AM - Get dressed from the waist-up. The sales call starts but you're muted, camera off, nodding along while simultaneously googling "how long does stomach flu last" and texting your own mom to see if she has any advice. 

1:00 PM - You heat up chicken noodle soup, answer three emails, approve a project estimate and realize you haven't eaten since yesterday. You eat the soup cold standing at the counter and think about what to make for dinner for the family.

4:00 PM - She's finally feeling a bit better and asks if she can watch TV. You say yes immediately because you have to run payroll and you've processed exactly zero of it. You sit back down at your laptop. The dog throws up (of course she does.) You clean that up too.

This is motherhood and entrepreneurship. It's not glamorous or "together". It's not the Instagram version. It's just real life.

And somehow payroll gets done, the kid feels better, and you survive another day.

I spent 20 years trying to manifest results until I realized I was doing it all wrong.

I've taken so many courses. I have a yoga teacher certification. I've spent endless time in therapy and journaling, trying to become the type of person who can magically achieve things.

And for decades, I felt like I was spinning my wheels. I was not getting anywhere and definitely not hitting my goals.

Then about a year ago, I had this moment where I realized: Am I actually doing anything that would be required to grow a company or am I just constantly working on my vibe?

I was doing all the talk, but none of the walk.

Here's what I know now: You can visualize all you want, but if you're not doing the actual work, it's not going to happen.

Agency founder "2 truths and a lie" - which one do you think is fake?

As the founder of a web development agency, we've had some really odd requests over the past 10 years.

A) A client sent us an XD link to build their site. We built the entire thing and then they said, "Oh wait, that wasn't the final design, the real one is in Figma. Please rebuild it all at no extra cost." Ummm....

B) A client insisted every single section on every single page needed animation. We repeatedly warned them that it was a bad idea but they didn't listen. Site goes live and two days later: "Why is the site so slow on mobile?" Dying. 

C) A client paid their non-refundable retainer, got "too busy" for two years despite multiple follow-ups and then emailed asking for a refund. ???

What's a weird thing a client has ever asked you to do? I want to hear your funny stories.

If you're a female agency owner, it is very likely you have a hard time sleeping well at night and wish you could fix it. 

I know how you feel as this was the story of my life too - for decades. 

I remember being in high school waking up at 2am in a panic thinking I was late for something. As an adult with three kids under the age of three, I didn't sleep through the night for seven years.

My emotional and mental health was in shambles.

I saw so many doctors to try to fix it. I remember one prescribing a medication and telling me "you need to get off this as soon as possible, long-term use could wreck your nervous system."

That is how far gone the situation was. I was willing to jeopardize my future health to just be able to sleep.

People trying to help would say "if you're so tired, just go to bed" but anyone who's had insomnia knows it doesn't work like that. Being absolutely exhausted is not a precursor to sleeping. 

When you're an insomniac, sleep is your enemy.

For decades, I did everything I could to fix it but then I learned something that changed my perspective: my sleep problems weren't about sleep hygiene, caffeine intake or blue light or needing more exercise. 

They were a trauma response.

I grew up in a home where it wasn't safe to let my guard down - bipolar dad, lots of yelling, constant unpredictability. I unconsciously learned to be hyper-vigilant, always scanning for danger - ALWAYS on alert.

My poor adult nervous system had no idea how to turn off after being trained for almost 20 years to be WIRED.

To me, this was such a revelation. 

If I could do the healing work to regulate my nervous system and actually teach my body that I was safe, my body could learn to relax and could sleep (unmedicated) through the night. 

And so I began the work to unlearn the survival skills I learned growing up. I moved away from meds and moved towards meditation (and other somatic healing modalities) and it has slowly worked. 

If if you're a female founder in the same boat, I challenge you to ask yourself the same question. 

Could your sleep issues be something deeper like your nervous sytem actually trying to protect you?

Being exhausted and strung out does not have to be your M.O. 

Going to bed does not have to be one of the most stressful parts of your day. You can learn how to turn it off and let your system find rest. 

It may seem impossible but I'm telling you it can be done.

For 40 years, I told myself my childhood wasn't "real" trauma.

I wasn't in a genocide. I was never physically abused. My house never burned down.

But here's my imperfect definition now - trauma results from an event or series of events that that have lasting adverse effects on functioning and well-being.

Does it have a lasting effect? Does it affect your well-being? Then it's trauma.

So if you're a badass female founder who thinks "nothing can touch me," I see you. I was you.

It is a dangrous way to live.

If you've ever had to ensure that designers and developers work successfully together as a female agency owner, you know how challenging that can be. 

Last week I was asked by the awesome Maria Sinisterra, RGD about what web designers can do to set web developers up for success I have shared the following four points:

1. Make sure the designer understands the nuances and limitations of the platform that will be used to build it. 

Example: don't design custom checkouts for a Shopify Basic client who will not be able to create custom checkouts.


2. Make sure that you are organized so that it is a clean hand-off to the developer with minimal confusion.

Example: ALL notes go into the Figma file. Not content docs here, password-protected image folders there and, oh yeah, here is a Slack message with a request to change sections here, here and here. 


3. Make sure your client has signed off on the design mockups and any design changes.

Example: Don't send developers mockups of pages and edits that the client has not approved which may have to be redone later at extra cost.


4. Make sure your design does not include out-of-scope items. 

Example: if animation is OOS, don't include animation in your design as the developer will build it and you send it and the OOS will wreck your budget.

I used to think if something was hard, I was doing it wrong.

For years I bought into the idea that things should flow, that if you're aligned and on the right path doing what you're meant to do that it should feel easy, effortless and light.

So when things got difficult I thought I was failing. 

I thought I'd chosen wrong and I'd spiral and second-guess everything, wondering if I should just quit and try something else.

That belief almost cost me my business more times than I can count.

Here's what I know now: Hard doesn't mean wrong. Hard means growth.

If you want to level up you have to get better at handling hard. 

You don't avoid the obstacle because the obstacle is the way into the next version of yourself.

When I hired my first full-time employee it was hard because I didn't know how to lead, give feedback without overthinking it or hold boundaries without feeling like I was being mean. But I didn't quit, I got better at managing.

When I went through chemo and had to keep the business running it was really hard but I didn't shut down. I built systems, hired help and learned how to step back without everything falling apart.

Every time I've grown it's been uncomfortable, scary and hard but that discomfort is the signal that I'm expanding, not that I'm failing.

Now when something feels hard I ask myself a different question. Not "Should I quit?" but "How do I get stronger so I can handle this?"

Because the truth is, more revenue means more problems, more team means more conflict and more clients means more responsibility. Growth doesn't get easier. You just get better at navigating it.

So if you're facing something hard right now, you're not doing it wrong. 

You're just growing.

The question is: Are you going to spiral, or are you going to get stronger?

If you've an agency owner and have worked with a developer, you know what it feels like to be trapped because you can't edit your own website.

IMO "developer dependency" is so unnecessary and such a money-grab. 

What a good website offboarding experience should look like:

1. Site should be built from the get-go to be easy for the client to use

2. On delivery of the site, a recorded offboarding call should be done to ensure the client knows how to use the website properly

3. Should the site owner get stuck using the website after the offboarding call, tutorials and/or screensharing lessons should be made available

4. The client should be training on the differeneces between working on a staging site vs a production site and when to use each

5. A backup protocol should be in place such that should the client make a mistake while working on the live site, a restore is available 

I've run a dev team for 10+ years and want to say nice and loud: 

A dev team is there to support the client's success NOT to be the dungeon master. 

To all my fellow tech people - trapping is not an ethical strategy for keeping clients.

I have a son who is in the process of doing his college applications and is stressing out trying to figure out what is his "best" path to becoming "successful". 

Over the past few weeks as he and I have discussed the long-term pros and cons of each choice, I can't help but reflect on my own life and how often I used to run into success-stress too. 

One of the best things I've ever done as a female agency owner, mom, partner, woman (all the things..) is to define what "success" looks like for me and I came up with this very simple phrase. 

For me success means living a life I love. 

It is not a number or a status symbol, it is not the clothes I wear or the places I travel, 

But instead I gauge it by how much love, how much joy, how much adventure, how much connection, how much contribution, how much fulfillment. 

I stopped chasing what the media told me "success" should be and got honest with myself about what I wanted to create. 

Once we know what our defintion of winning is, life gets a lot more clear and a lot more peaceful.

As a female agency owner, you have a right to be supported. 

You can build your business around what YOU need and you do not need to apologize for that.

Why I HATE the whole premise of New Year's Resolutions...

If you're like most people, this is the time of year when you start getting introspective about your life. 

A new year - what do I want to change? What needs to go? What do I want to achieve or become in the next year of this short life I have?

I think the process of taking inventory is terrific but the whole paradigm of a resolution is flawed. 

To just "resolve" to lose weight, save more money etc is NOT a thing. 

There is no waking up and thinking "today I lose weight". 

A goal without a plan is just a wish and a big waste of your emotional energy. 

Try this instead for better results:

1. Identify clearly what you want. 

Example: NOT "lose weight" but "lose 10 pounds by May 1". 


2. Identify a preliminary game plan with the understanding and openess it may need to change as you go. 

Example: I am going to create a caloric deficit by intermittent fasting between 9:00 pm until 3:00 pm the following day, Monday-Saturday.


3. Identify all the sneaky, unhelpful self-talk that is guaranteed to get in your way and MUST be abolished if you want a shot at succeeding.

Example: "I am going to be so hungry if I fast for 18 hours/day, there is no way I could do that. I will be too hard." 


4. Track your progress to see if your plan is actually working

Example: Every Saturday weigh yourself to see if you are losing weight. If not, adjust your plan. Pro tip: consult an expert if you're not making progress to help you revise your strategy - DO NOT give up just because plan "A" is not working. 


5. Understand that executing on your plan will create a tremendous amount of discipline until the new habit is installed at which point it will become muscle-memory (and just part of your routine). 


Fact: there is no magic-results-fairy who just drops things in your lap. 

The Universe, God (whatever you want to say) may be the source of the idea but it is up to us to bring it to life.

For 35 years, I believed there was a predetermined plan for my life. Then I realized that belief was making me miserable.

I was raised with a religious background, deep in it for decades. One core belief: There is a plan, a purpose, a calling, a destiny. Something you were born to be.

For years, I found comfort in that.

Now? I reject it completely.

Because it meant I was always chasing some phantom "best self" that was over there while I was stuck here, always falling short of this invisible target.

For decades I spun out trying to figure out what my "calling" was. If my life wasn't working, it was because I wasn't aligned. I wasn't on the right path.

I couldn't live that way anymore.

Here's what gave me peace instead: You get to decide what you want to be. There is no one call, no one path, no one destiny.

You can be whatever you decide you want to be.

When I disconnected from the idea that I was falling short of some predetermined purpose and saw myself as the creator of my own life experience, my stress went down.
