I developed and headed content strategy, which gained an organic reach of over five million within 24 hours and 22M in 10 days of the launch of 'The Singleton Single Malt Whisky' in Nigeria.

I oversaw the development and integration of digital PR and influencer content strategy to facilitate the Guinness Night Football campaign, which boosted mentions by 933%, reaching 247M in five weeks.

In my role as Communications Lead at The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council Secretariat: 

To celebrate Nigeria's movement in the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business rankings by 24 points', I developed/launched a social media and PR campaign and built PR cheat sheets for several Honorable Ministers.

Robust management of the launch event resulted in a ground-breaking record achievement of 79,000 mentions within two weeks.

I fostered and strengthened strategic business partnerships with key stakeholders by organizing bespoke events across North West, North East, South East, and South West regions across the country.

I reviewed and managed creative communication scripts and speech writing for the Vice President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Secretary of The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council.

Yauhan Mehta is a special one. 

Especially for how he approaches career coaching for immigrants. 

There are so so many things he does well. But the biggest one for me is how he thinks about getting "survival jobs."

When clients need immediate income, one of the first things Yauhan does is help them identify the three most common skills required for their target role.

Next, he then works with them to get a job that builds those skills within the Canadian context. 

For example, if someone wants to focus on training and development, they can work as a shift supervisor or team lead at Tim Hortons or McDonald’s, where they’ll be mentoring, coaching, training, hiring, and onboarding people.

Which is a way better option than taking a telemarketing or sales job where the transferable skills aren’t as obvious.

Especially because if you and I trawl through our networks, there are hundreds of stories of fellow immigrants, friends, or family members who took jobs that were not in sync with who they are or their skillset, and found it impossible to find their way back to a career they loved.

How do we we help immigrants access the hidden job market?

Why is networking a non-negotiable in Canada? 

Why is credentialing still a big problem in Canada?

How do we help more immigrants see that their skills are exponential, not linear? And that the work you did in your home country can apply across multiple industries here.

In episode #133, I sat down with Simon Trevarthen of Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) to ask him these questions and more.

This was a fun, honest conversation with someone who understands the Canadian work landscape more than most people. 

One big takeaway for me:

🎙️Survival jobs can lead to underemployment traps. It’s tough trying to settle into Canada without an income. But grabbing the first available job out of desperation can sometimes lock immigrants into cycles that take years to escape. Plus, Canada also loses when an immigrant works beneath their capabilities. Worth exploring Yauhan Mehta’s approach when considering a survival job.
