I didn’t spend decades repeating unhealthy patterns because I was broken. I was carrying what I watched, inherited, and learned to survive.Like many women of color, I grew up observing strength that looked like silence, self-sacrifice, over-functioning, and emotional endurance. Love was something you earned. Safety came from being useful. Rest felt unsafe. Asking for help felt like failure.

So I became hyper-independent.In my relationships.
In my work.
In my identity.
And no amount of success, achievement, or “doing the work” actually changed those patterns — until I understood where they came from.

I’m a Spiritual Neuroscientist and Generational Healing Expert. My work sits at the intersection of neuroscience, epigenetics, ancestral wisdom, and lived experience.

It wasn’t that I chose the wrong men.

It wasn’t that I didn’t love hard enough.
It wasn’t that I wasn’t self-aware.
It was this: My ancestors didn’t teach me how to love.
They taught me how to survive.

And I was confusing the two.
I learned that love meant:
• Endure.
• Overgive.
• Stay strong.
• Don’t need too much.
• Keep the peace.
• Handle it yourself.

That wasn’t romance.
That was resilience.
That wasn’t intimacy.
That was survival strategy.

And survival strategies make sense in the context they were born in.
But they don’t always create healthy love.
Or healthy leadership.
Or healthy ambition.
Or healthy self-worth.

We aren’t bad at love. We just might be loyal to patterns that were built before we ever had a choice.

I was built to stay and endure.
But not anymore.

I stayed in toxic workplaces even when they completely broke my confidence.
I stayed in a marriage long after the love was gone.
I stayed in relationships that should have ended years earlier.

Because I thought endurance was strength.
Because I thought loyalty meant staying.
Because I thought leaving meant failure.

But not anymore.

Now I can proudly say this: I’m a quitter.

I quit environments that cost me my peace.
I quit relationships that require self-abandonment.
I quit narratives that glorify suffering.

For generations, the women in my family endured because they had to.
They didn’t have options.
They didn’t have financial freedom.
They didn’t have language for boundaries.

Staying was survival.
But because of them I do have options.
And breaking the cycle means knowing when to leave.

To everyone in my lineage who had to endure...we are free now.
The cycle is broken.

You want to know what it feels like to be single year after year?
It feels hella intentional.

After a divorce and multiple failed relationships, I had to admit something hard:
It wasn’t them. It was me repeating the same dynamic with different people.

At some point, I had to stop asking, “Why does this keep happening to me?”
And start asking, “What am I repeating that I no longer want to carry?”

So I chose to pause.
Because what I kept finding was familiar.
And what I wanted was evolved.

When you heal at this level, you don’t just change who you date.
You change who you are in every room.
You see your family differently.
You see friendships differently.
You see how you’ve been performing for connection your entire life.
And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Being single these last five years has been lonely at times. (Truth time...sometimes it's been excruciatingly lonely).
But in those moments, I knew I wasn’t just alone.
I was breaking something that had been running through my lineage for decades.

I wasn’t just healing for love.
I was releasing the role I learned to play in every relationship...and the role the women before me were forced to play in theirs.

Now dating looks completely different.
I don’t seek to be chosen.
I decide if I choose.
And I only choose partnership that matches the woman I’ve become. Healthy love, growth, elevation, and mutual expansion.

Most people think they’re stuck in unhealthy relationship dynamics because they haven’t met the right person.
But many of us are repeating inherited patterns that show up in love, family, leadership, and even how we relate to ourselves.

Most people think healing generational wounds looks dramatic or obvious.
In reality, it’s quiet.
It shows up in how you relate, what you tolerate, and what you finally stop carrying.

Here are a few ways I’ve noticed generational healing actually shows up in real life:
1️⃣ You start seeing your family differently.
Not through blame, but through context. You recognize they were humans navigating survival without the language, safety, or privilege to heal the way many of us can today.

2️⃣ You begin noticing how the past is shaping the present.
The stories you grew up with start to reveal themselves in your relationships, your boundaries, and the ways you’ve learned to give or disappear to feel safe.

3️⃣ You stop playing the role you were assigned early on.
The strong one.
The fixer.
The peacekeeper.
The overachiever.
And you begin showing up as your DOPE AF self, not as the version you had to become to survive.

4️⃣ Your tolerance for unhealthy dynamics drops.
What you once excused or endured now feels loud in your body. Not because you’re rigid, but because you’re clearer.

5️⃣ You learn that protecting your peace is sacred.
You set boundaries.
You make choices for your needs.
You stop putting yourself last in the name of connection.

You might think holidays like this would bring me down.

But honestly?
They feel different now.

Valentine’s Day used to feel like a reminder of what I didn’t have.

Now it feels like a celebration of what I built.

This is a moment for me to love myself more.
To reflect on how far I’ve come in my healing.
To celebrate the woman who learned how to stop overgiving, stop self-sacrificing, and finally choose herself.

This might be the last Valentine’s Day I spend alone. Who knows?

But here’s what I do know:

Every single day…including this one…I choose to love me first.

And that changed everything.

Whether you’re partnered, single, dating, divorced, or “it’s complicated,” I hope today you’re loving you first.

Because the healthiest relationships start there.

Meanwhile, my CFO (Chief Fun Officer) Cody is fully committed to his Valentine’s pup cup this morning.

And honestly?
That’s the kind of love I support.

The first time I felt my ancestors speak to me, I wasn’t in a church.
I wasn’t in therapy.

I was in the quietest moment my nervous system had ever experienced.
And in that stillness, I heard something that changed me:
“You have nothing to fear. You did it. You got yourself to freedom.
Now the most uncomfortable part has to happen. You have to enjoy it.
Let yourself play. Let yourself be loved. Let the world support you.
You took us this far. Now let us take you the rest of the way.”

What shook me wasn’t the words.
It was the realization underneath them.

I had spent so much of my life trying to secure freedom...not just for me, but for my whole family.
First to graduate.
First to earn the degrees.
First to create financial security.
First to step into rooms we had never stepped into before.

And I was living as if joy was the final reward after all the work was done.

But in that moment, I realized: The work was already done.

I had taken my lineage somewhere new. And maybe…the next evolution of generational healing wasn't about more striving.
Maybe it was finally about allowing myself to experience what they didn’t get to:
Freedom.
Joy.
Peace on my own terms.

We talk a lot about breaking cycles. But we don’t talk enough about what happens after you break them.
The moment when you realize:
I don’t have to keep proving.
I don’t have to keep carrying.
I get to choose my own path.
I get to define my own peace.
I get to enjoy the life I worked so hard to create.

That, to me, is generational healing.
Not just freeing the past...but giving yourself permission to live fully in the present.

Today I’m attending my first Family Constellations workshop, a powerful healing modality that helps uncover the inherited patterns and generational dynamics that shape how we show up in relationships, family, work, and life.

A lot of what we think is just “who we are” is often something we learned, adapted to, or inherited from the family systems we grew up in.

And the truth is…you can’t break a pattern you don’t understand.

I abandoned myself on a date a few months ago.
And the wild part?
I’ve spent years working on breaking my inherited relationship patterns. And I still caught myself doing it.

There I was, sitting across from someone who was saying things that made me deeply uncomfortable.
And when he asked what I thought about it?
I smiled and said: “Yeah… that’s fine with me.”

It wasn’t fine.
I felt it immediately.
That familiar tightening in my body.
That instinct to make things smoother, easier, less complicated… even if it meant silencing myself.

For years I thought moments like that meant something was wrong with me.
That I wasn’t healed enough.
But this is exactly how inherited patterns work.
They don’t disappear overnight.

They show up in moments where connection feels like it might be at risk.
And if your nervous system learned early in life that connection required you to quiet parts of yourself…
Self-abandonment becomes automatic.
Not because you’re weak.
Because you were trained to survive.

And here’s the part most people don’t talk about:
Even after you do the work, the pattern can still try to show up.
The difference is… now you can see it.
You can interrupt it.

We talked about something that still matters just as much today:
women stepping fully into their dopeness and claiming what they deserve in the workplace.

Because here’s the truth.

Too many brilliant, capable, wildly talented women are still being underpaid, overlooked, or taught to play small when it comes to advocating for themselves.

Not anymore.

Especially not during Women’s History Month.

This month is a reminder that progress doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens when women start owning their value… and when we support each other in doing the same.

So let’s normalize conversations about money.
Let’s normalize negotiating.
Let’s normalize women claiming the compensation that reflects their brilliance.

And let’s support the queens around us while we’re at it.

Hiring into leadership roles is slowing and women are feeling it.

LinkedIn data shows that across 16 major economies, women's share of new senior leadership hires peaked at 34.8% in 2022. Since then, it's declined — including a full percentage-point drop in the past year alone.

Important to note: Women aren’t applying less. The research suggests the slowdown is happening on the employer side as labor market slack impacts hiring decisions.

That's why mindset matters, especially when walking into a job interview.
