Freelancing has allowed me to do things that once felt impossible. 

From becoming financially independent to taking on responsibilities to gradually being able to buy things that sat on my ‘to-get’ list for years… I’ve come a long way.  

But one lesson I learned through the years is making money is one thing, but knowing how to spend money is the real skill and I guess you only learn this after making mistakes. 

So I’m sharing some money lessons I learned the hard way but they might help you if you’re new to making money. 

1. Save for slow months. 

Freelancing isn’t always very dependable. Some months you make nothing, others, you make 3x - so save early on for at least 4-5 months so you’re not taking low-paying clients out of fear.

2. Never, I repeat NEVER spend based on one big month. 

Probably the most painful lesson I learned. The urge to splurge on a large payment is a trap. Treat big months as a chance to save / invest more. Pay yourself your normal monthly amount and nothing more.

3. Understand the difference between luxury and necessity. 

If your work requires you to work from a laptop - then spending on a high-end machine is not a luxury. I’d rather call it an investment. 

4. Upgrade your lifestyle gradually. 

Invest in better clothes, better tools, better gadgets, better experiences. These things improve your quality of life and often your work too. But the key is: don’t upgrade everything at once.

5. Track your income and expenses. 

Make a simple spreadsheet and track where your money is going. Personally, it’s very hard for me to track every last rupee but I know where most of the big chunk is going and it makes it easy to see how much you made in a year or month. 

6. Detach yourself from money.

This universal rule of detachment is a gamechanger for any area of life you apply to. You don’t work for money. Money is a ‘by-product’ of you investing your time and energy into something. 

7. Don’t be a kanjoos. 

Might sound contradicting, but spending money allows you to make more money cos it motivates you to work harder. So once a while (intentionally) overspend on experiences and people you love. Just a personal thing, but I can make more money later but some occasions and people might not be there forever. 

8. Help someone near you.

If Allah is blessing you, take that as an opportunity to help someone who might need it. Because at the end of the day, all the money will stay in this world.

YouTube scriptwriter and growth strategist

A quick hack to improve retention in B2B educational videos is to add mini re-hooks in every section. 

We already know the first 30 seconds are really important and that’s when viewers decide whether they’ll stay till the end or drop off. 

But with attention spans this low, the hook alone isn’t enough. 

So we need to re-hook them in every section and the best way to do that is use curiosity gaps.

A creator who does it really well is Kane Kallaway. 

He would introduce a new concept mid section and naturally, the viewer get curious to know. By the time he explains that, he talks about a common mistake they’re making which hooks them again. 

Examples: 

1. Keep this in mind, because in a minute I’ll show you why this tiny detail changes everything.
2. Before you apply this, there’s one mistake you’re probably making right now, and I’ll explain that in the next step.
3. Now, here’s where people mess this up, and the fix is surprisingly simple. But to understand that, we need one more piece…
4. Most teams stop here, and that’s why they don’t see results. Here are three quick ways to fix that.
5. Here’s the part that usually goes wrong, and the reason might surprise you. 

So be strategic with your re-hooks and I promise it makes the biggest difference! 

Tip: DO NOT over do it. pls

The reason your B2B videos aren’t generating good leads is because you’re making these 4 intro mistakes.

❌ 1. You start with who you are instead of what they get.

Your viewer doesn’t care about you or your title. They care about why they should stay and how you can help. 

However, it’s important to introduce yourself, what you do, and what you’ve done to help people like them towards the 50-80 second mark to prove credibility. 

❌ 2. You talk in vague outcomes.

Phrases like “grow your business”, “save time” etc., are too generic for decision-makers who hear them every day. Tell them exactly what problem you're solving and how you do it better than the rest.

❌ 3. You start with a story that takes too long to pay off.

Beating around the bush instead of telling them what the video is about kills retention before value even shows up. Your hook doesn't need a build up.

❌ 4. You make the intro too complicated.

When the hook is too long, uses big fancy words, or covers too many things at once, it makes it hard to follow. Result: your audience lose interest and stop watching.

I’ve been MIA with these weekly breakdowns…but here’s what I worked on last week:

Most of my time went into client work i.e., writing. 

I wrote one long-form script for a video editing software.

Repackaged titles for 2/4 videos I ideated the previous week for a B2B x YouTube client.

Made 2 script outlines + 4 thumbnail design inspirations + wrote the first script of the batch. 

Made an outline / pointer-based script for another client in the B2B x YouTube space. 

Wrote a trial script in the make money online / finance niche. 

Gave a one-way interview for a prospect (which was pretty cool). 

With all the scripts I wrote, I tried being very intentional with opening curiosity loops and using pattern interrupts through out.

Ended the week with Zootopia 2 and popcorn 🍿
