Five extra years of life. Not from a drug. From a habit.

On Tuesday I chaired my first session of the AI & Emerging Tech Network at the iFHP | International Federation of Health Plans. Health insurers from across the globe. One virutal room. One question: where does AI actually move the needle?

Emile Stipp, Managing Director of Vitality AI and Global Chief Actuary at Discovery Limited, answered with data that silenced the virtual room.

Vitality's research — a seven-year study of over 465,000 members, peer-reviewed by the London School of Economics — shows that moving from inactive to active can add up to five years to life expectancy. Up to a 57% reduction in mortality. 

Their latest work on sleep, tracking more than 47 million nights across 105,000 individuals, found that consistent sleep habits can add up to four more years. Their "7:1 rule" — seven hours, within a one-hour bedtime window, five nights a week — reduced mortality risk by 24%.

Impressive numbers. But here's what makes this an AI story, not just a health story.

Vitality uses causal inference models — not correlations — to isolate the actual impact of behaviour change. They apply habit theory to predict which behaviours stick. They consolidate fragmented data across more than 2,800 dimensions into a single, personalised health picture.

Their partnership with Google integrates Vertex AI and Gemini with that proprietary dataset to deliver personalised interventions at scale. Launching in the UK and South Africa by summer 2026, with plans to reach 13 million customers globally. This isn't AI bolted onto insurance. It's AI built into the business model.

The early results prove it. In South Africa, personalised screening drove a 5.5x increase in screening rates and an 18.7% lower chance of cancer being first detected at Stages 3 or 4.

I polled the network on priorities. Digital front door and care navigation topped at 27%. AI in claims and underwriting at 23%. Agentic AI at 18%. The breadth tells me these organisations aren't looking for silver bullets. They're looking for a coherent path forward.

Three takeaways as chair:

👉🏾 Invest. You cannot watch from the sidelines while the world rebuilds itself around intelligence.

👉🏾 Own your data. Vitality's Google partnership is instructive — they didn't hand over the data. They layered best-in-class AI onto proprietary assets built over decades.

👉🏾 Treat governance as a foundation, not a brake. Get data quality, privacy and interoperability right and you accelerate. Get them wrong and you don't deploy at all.

We're moving from reactive treatment to precision prevention. The question for every insurer: are you building the AI infrastructure to deliver it?

Private medical insurance is changing.

Over the past few years something quite important has happened: the way the industry talks about itself has shifted.

Insurers increasingly describe themselves as health companies rather than financial intermediaries. That shift in language matters, because language shapes strategy — and strategy ultimately shapes operating models.

I recently contributed to the HBI Private Medical Insurance 2026 report alongside many brilliant industry voices (Dan Caines, Shane Dillon, James McGrigor, Matt Connolly, Pradnyesha Rode, Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve, Katherine Tryon and Christopher Watney).

Across those conversations, there is genuine progress.

Prevention edging closer to the centre.
Primary care becoming part of the insurance conversation.
Data and digital quietly turning into infrastructure.
A growing acceptance that the relationship with a member starts long before something goes wrong.

You can see it in small but meaningful ways.

Because real change in healthcare rarely arrives as a single breakthrough. It shows up as alignment — between insurers and providers, incentives and outcomes, technology and care.

That alignment is where the next chapter sits — in the space between payer and provider: shared pathways, shared data, aligned incentives and new models of collaboration.

And increasingly, AI will shape that layer — not as a shiny capability, but as the connective tissue that makes continuous care possible.

It’s one of the reasons forums like Healthcare Business International matter. They bring insurers, providers, operators, technology leaders, investors and advisors into the same room to shape that future together.

The direction feels right. The progress is real.

The work ahead is making that intent structural.
