Suitcase packed. Heading back to Toronto soon.

For the past few years, I’ve spent several months of each year in Bangkok.

Somewhere along the way, it became the place where I feel most at home.

Not because I planned it that way.

But because of the everyday people who make life here feel familiar.

The condo staff who greet me every morning.

My massage therapist.

The woman who sells my takeaway meals.

When I told them I’d be gone for a while, one gave me a hug.

Another handed me snacks for the flight, on the house.

It reminded me of something I didn’t fully understand when I first started living as a digital nomad:

Home isn’t necessarily where you stay the longest.

It’s where people notice when you leave.

Today I had one of those much-needed calls with a close friend.

He’s in the US and I’m somewhere in Asia.

We ended up talking about everything: careers, relationships, life plans, and the strange ways our thinking evolves over time.

At some point the conversation turned to something we’ve both noticed lately.

The older we get, the more willing we are to question our mental models.

Ideas we once treated as stable truths (about success, love, and ambition) start to feel less like rules and more like hypotheses. 

Letting go of them feels strangely liberating.

At one point he said something that I literally had to write down:

“If you think you already knew what you're looking for, then you probably didn’t discover anything new.”

It reminded me how easy it is to approach life like a checklist of shoulds, which leaves very little room for wonder.

Hearing one of my wisest friends say “lead with curiosity” felt like a useful reset.

And honestly, having someone you can explore those questions with —seriously, but also with humility and humor— is one of life’s underrated privileges.
