Itu semua cliche jer Doc...

You’ve heard them all right…

Another one that’s often dropped here on LinkedIn! 

“They say if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.”

Bila baca memang best, so ramai lah coaches suka guna. 

But nobody told us that “going together” comes with it’s own sets of challenges.

The hardest lesson for me, this last 2 years working with doctors, is not so much the business ideas or strategies, rather it’s the softer side of things.

The “communication” with fellow team members and partners.

Part ni yang kita tak faham
Part ni yang kita selalu fail
Part ni yang kita akan frust 

Kalau tak ada TPC (theory, principles and concepts) and mental models yang Pak Izzi ajar and kami implement di Mafar Group dah lama dah…

Saya bertumbuk dengan Arieffahmi Abd Razak di sungai. 

Saya keluar dari group ni…

And I have the best story too! 

But it didn’t happen that way, and there are many reasons why. 

That’s what we are “really” sharing with fellow doctors.

Aku ajak dia jumpa, tapi last minit. 
Dia agak upset laa, tapi kami jumpa jugak. 
Thanks Shah sebab make time, walaupun kau busy hari tu. 

Sembang sikit pasal direction tentang podcast Recharge Usahawan. Dia bagi suggestion dan ideas. 

Tapi tiba-tiba dia share tentang satu situasi yang dia hadapi, dan dia bagi satu analogi yang buat aku terus pause.

Dia tanya, “Al…kau pernah fikir tak pasal mata lebah dengan mata lalat?”

Mula-mula aku gelak. Bunyi macam random. Tapi bila dia cerita, aku rasa macam dia tengah cakap pasal aku...haha!

Dia kata, kalau kau letak lalat dalam taman bunga paling cantik, dia tetap akan cari benda busuk dulu. Bukan sebab lalat tu jahat. Memang itu radar dia.

Lepas tu dia sambung, kalau kau letak lebah dekat tempat yang kotor, dia tetap cari bunga juga. Dia cari madu. Bukan sebab lebah tu baik. Memang itu radar dia.

Tempat sama. 
Realiti sama. 
Cuma fokus berbeza.

Then aku dapat aha moment, aku dapat connect the dots dengan topik "self-awareness" yang Pak Izzi share kan. 

Ada masa, aku punya self-awareness pun low jugak! 

Dekat situ aku sedar, self-awareness ni bukan benda besar yang kau kena pergi retreat baru dapat. Kadang-kadang self-awareness tu simple… kau perasan apa yang mata kau asyik cari bila kau penat, bila kau tertekan, bila kau rasa tak cukup.

Sebab masa kita stress, kita mudah jadi “mata lalat”. Cepat nampak yang tak kena. Cepat nampak salah orang. Cepat nampak yang kurang. Dan bila itu yang kita scan hari-hari… itu jugak yang memenuhi kepala.

Energy follows attention. 
What you focus on expands.
Where you put your attention, your energy follows. 
 
Bukan maksudnya kita kena pura-pura semuanya ok. Bukan toxic positivity. Cuma satu shift kecil.

Apa yang kau cari, itu yang kau jumpa. 
Apa yang kau jumpa, itu yang kau percaya. 

Apa yang kau percaya, itu yang kau bawa dalam cara kau bercakap, cara kau buat keputusan, cara kau layan orang.

Sejak tu aku buat satu check-in simple.

Hari ni aku nak operate sebagai lebah atau lalat?

Dan bila aku pilih jadi lebah, aku bukan ignore masalah. Aku cuma pilih untuk cari sesuatu yang boleh dibina. Satu peluang kecil. Satu langkah yang boleh buat keadaan jadi lebih baik.

So soalan hari ini…

Sekarang dalam hidup atau bisnes, kau rasa kau tengah banyak operate dengan mata lebah… atau mata lalat?

How’s the first day treating you? 

Okay or not?

The traffic is still calm as it’s still school holidays kan. 

If you’re feeling a bit sleepy or keep glancing at the clock waiting for Maghrib… don’t worry, we are in the same boat. 😅

But honestly, this month is also a reminder for me, from a business perspective…

In business, we are always chasing speed. 

Chasing KPI. 
Chasing growth. 
Chasing the next big thing.

But Ramadan teaches us something else. 

It teachers us to slow down.
It teachers us to be present. 
It teaches us about "Kita"(Us).

For example networking this month isn't just swapping business cards in a stiff meeting room. 

Real connection happens when…

- We pass the dates to a stranger.

- We send that "Jom catch up for moreh?" text to an old friend.

- We ask our team members, "You okay?" instead of just asking for updates.

To all my doctor clients and friends facing patients today while fasting, I salute you. 

That too is real leadership.

So this month, l wanna focus less on "Saya" (Me) and more on "Kita". 

Less of "What can I get?" and more "What can we share?"

Salam Ramadhan to everyone observing.

"Why do I have to repeat myself 10 times?" 

"Why is my team so slow?" 

"Kenapa susah sangat nak ajar diorang ni?"

If you lead people, you know this frustration. 

It feels like dragging a boulder uphill. 

Every. Single. Day.

You think the problem is “them”. 

But Pak Izzi told me directly the other day, that the problem is “me”.

When we get frustrated, our "cup" is empty. 

We are trying to serve with stress instead of love. 

And when we complain "Susah la," we are literally programming our brain to fail.

Your mind is a faithful servant. 

You tell it, "This is hard." 

It says, "Okay boss, let's make it painful."

You are self-sabotaging your own leadership.

- Stop the "Susah" narrative immediately.

- Tell yourself, "It is easy, and it is necessary."

- Fill your cup first (Love, Energy, Happiness).

You can't lead the 'rakyat' if you are at war with your own mind.

I have extensive background in the personal development industry, with experience in mental wellness and emotional fitness, corporate international marketing and education. 

I have worked with corporate and government-linked organisations, youths-at-risk, as well as humanitarian endeavours.
 
I hold a MSc. in Communication, Behaviour and Credibility Analysis from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), and a PGD in Psychotherapy & Counselling. 

I have trained and spoken at numerous corporate, government and non-profit organisations, conferences and forums on EI, Psychological First Aid (PFA), Employee Development, Leadership, Corporate Wellness, Mental Health and Emotional Fitness.

In my personal capacity, I am an adventurer and investor, and I find joy in humanitarian endeavours, including an orphanage in Indonesia, and Kathmandu, Nepal. 

I also enjoy outdoor adventure like trekking, caving, kayaking, mountain climbing and backpacking.

I didn’t visit mom yesterday as I had to catch up with work. At 9.55pm she called from the hospital to say she had vomitted. We chatted for a bit. 

An hour later at 10.50pm she called again. Said she “couldn’t stand it” and asked me to come. And to tell my siblings to come too. 

Hubby and I jumped into the vehicle and sped to the hospital.  And for the next half hour, I was trying to comfort mom that I’m coming. Although her handphone must have dropped onto the bed. 

All I could see was the ceiling and her weak muffled voice when I called out to her. 

I said, “mom, press the blue button”, but she said she can’t reach it. I think she must be too weak to find it. 

A short while later I saw glimpses of nurses moving about around mom. 

The moment hubby parked the vehicle, I jumped out and raced to Level 2 and to her ward. Visiting hours was over but I managed to get in. 

Mum was rushed to the ICU around after midnight. By 2.30am, after one by one of my siblings, nephews and nieces left, I told hubby to go home and sleep. 

He left, u-turned back, I told him go back, he left, then u-turned and I said, “go home. sleep. rest. I need you fresh tomorrow.”

I stayed here at the hospital by myself the entire time, once a while going back to the ICU to visit mom. Although we are not allowed to stay in the ICU ward, the nurses allowed me to come in see mom for a bit once in a while. 

I sat at the sofa in the A&E for a while. Shifted to the lobby for a while (at the break of dawn, I heard some chickens crowing out there). At times I sat at the metal bench outside the ICU ward.. a very quiet and lonely “alley”…

I’m not sad, not afraid, doing my best to stay calm and hopeful. Visualising mom coming home with me. I didn’t want to go home, wanting to be nearby, even if by myself. 

It’s 6.20am.. I’m going up to the ICU again, to check in on mom. 
Good morning my friends…

I say Emotional Intelligence is Elegant and Charming. And Fun!

.. and jolly good for your mental and social health too ;)

I know it’s Monday morning and everyone’s back at work.. so before any Monday blues creeps in, let’s check out the fun side of EI first!

10. Charisma starts with self-awareness. Know who you are, and others will gravitate toward you.

9. Respond, don’t react. Emotional elegance is staying composed under pressure.

8. Elegance is the ability to stay kind in an unkind world.

7. Stay curious about others. True charm is born from genuine interest.

6. True confidence doesn’t shout; it whispers. Be steady, not loud.

5. Grace under pressure is what sets you apart. Practice it daily.

4. The most charming people make others feel seen and heard. Be that person.

3. Elegant communication is both assertive and respectful. Master the balance.

2. Poise is strength in stillness. It develops confidence.

1. Stay grounded. Humility keeps you approachable and respectable.

Emotional Intelligence Mastery

When I was in university 3 decades ago, everyone wants to study engineering, economics, and such. 

The “marketable” subjects. 

“Because you’ll get jobs easily”
and “because you can earn better salary,” they said. 

I studied Philosophy. 
Many said it was not “marketable”. I won’t get jobs with it. I won’t command good money $$.
I was looked down upon. 

I ended up being hired in Regional Marketing roles. They did not hire me for the subjects I did. or did not do. 

I used EI during my interviews. I was chosen over 2 other powerful candidates in the final round. I was paid decent.

Today, everyone says, “the world now revolves around AI”. It is THE industry to be in, to strive for, or to teach. That’s where the “economy” is. EI is just a soft skill. 

I disagree. 
Emotional intelligence is not soft.
On the contrary, it is a hard intelligence. 

1. I use EI as a foundation in my Psychological First Aid classes. 
2. EI is the tool for my Mental Health and Leadership classes. 
3. I was invited to AI roundtable discussion for my perspective on EI.
4. I was invited to give a speech on EI in an AI conference.
5. I was invited to moderate HR giants on EI in a HR and WorkTech Summit

But it’s something else . . .

since 2 decades ago, a few individuals who were suicidal . . later find me to say “thank you”

Some of them I knew personally.
Some I didn’t quite. 

I used EI. 
This does not earn me anything. But I get to save precious life.
And the “thank you” were payment no amount of money can buy. 

I do not make $5,000, $15,000, or $150,000 with my work on EI. 

But EI skills give me emotional mastery.. 

which is foundational to manage biases, temperament and decision making. 
And also fear and greed. 

All the skills needed to be decent at investing.

Which makes you the money so you can be selective in the work you choose to do. 
And focus on making a difference.

If you are a student right now, young or adult. 
Or a trainer or business owner thinking what topic you want to teach. 

Study what gives meaning in your life. 
Teach what gives meaning for others. 

The money.. the $100, the $1000, the $100,000 will find its way to you. 


P.S. What one skill you were once dismissed for, that later became your biggest advantage?

I saw this on the way to dinner with the fam yesterday. It’s so subtle it’s almost missed. Immediately fished out my hp to capture it before it’s gone. 

A few people standing beside me looked at me strangely and their eyes followed where my mobile was pointing towards.

When they looked up.. and saw what I was seeing, a quiet smile lighted up their faces. 

Emotional intelligence begins with attention.

What you train your mind to scan for.. it could be threats, flaws, or beauty.. they become your reality.

*What is your mind unconsciously looking out for lately?

This was the 3rd pint of blood that my mom received within her 3 days in the ICU. 

My post is not going to be about her, nor I, or how we are coping. It has been physically and mentally exhausting, but.. emotionally calm throughout. And for that I am grateful. 

What I wish to say instead is.. if you are healthy and well, do consider to donate blood. 

Because blood donation saves lives. 

I used to donate regularly before but have forgotten to of late. Looking at this pack of life, it dawned on me..

I may not be able to repay the humans from whom it has been drawned from.. I wouldn’t even be able to know who they are. 

.. humans who value lives, and are willing to sacrifice a piece of their time, energy, and of themselves, literally, to save other than themselves. 

The highest form of emotional intelligence.. in its finest form.. if there is such a thing

This blood, the image of it, shall be a reminder to me.. that humanity does not need to speak

it just quietly serves..

And after 4 days, my tears finally decided to come . . .
