I’ve been seeing a flood of “Head of Marketing” roles lately—and too many of them come with 🚩🚩🚩 all over the place. A few common red flags:

🚩 Comp ranges from $60K to $140K
 That’s a huge swing. It usually means they have no idea what they actually need—or worse, they’re hoping to land a unicorn for $70K. For context: the average true Head of Marketing salary in the U.S. is $165K+ ([source: BuiltIn, 2024]).

🚩 The job description is 8 roles in one
 From SEO to brand, paid media to CRM, copywriting to RevOps… no one person can own all of that effectively. This isn’t scrappy—it’s setting someone up to fail.

🚩 The CEO is “looking for a leader,” but actually wants a task rabbit
 In reality, many startup CEOs are still acting as the de facto CMO. That’s fine—but be honest about it. If the strategy is already baked, you're not hiring a "head," you're hiring hands.

This year has been one of our most successful since getting married.

I put a ton of energy into planning, picking gear, and traveling to capture content for my clients. Most trips these days, it’s just me—solo.

On social, it probably looks glamorous… and honestly, parts of it are. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve had to learn how to protect my time. Balancing seeing new places, trying new things, staying locked in for shoots, interviews, and still running my agency with a lean crew—it’s a lot, but it’s the dream.

No complaints. This is everything I prayed for years ago.

This morning I was up early grabbing sunrise footage in Portland. The city gives me a bit of Grand Rapids energy—just with a totally different landscape.

While I was flying the drone, a garbage truck driver watched me for a few minutes. When I finally looked over, he laughed and said, “Man, I thought you were tripping out staring straight up like that.” I joked back, “Thank you, Jesus,” and we ended up chatting.

He walked over while waiting for another truck to arrive, so I showed him the screen—300+ feet of the Portland skyline. We both stood there taking it in. I asked if the sunrises always looked like this. He smiled and said, “Honestly… they get even better.”

That stuck with me. The pride he had in his city, the warmth in his voice. Not too many generations back, we had a garbage truck driver in my family—so it hit home.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to be “rich.” The world chases money, status, things… but the real wealth is character, family, experiences, and how we honor God through it all.

In 2025 I planned on doing fractional marketing for brands or SaaS companies. And we have done that.

But what has propelled our growth is our knack for getting things done with websites and videos. 

I've personally launched several websites and visited places all over the US and one international to create video content.

The last 30 days had been a huge lesson. 

I invested a ton into labor by percentage and really it drove no increase in growth.

What it did support was operations, systems, and learnings.

Invaluable.

Since I’ve grabbed projects by the horn. Closed sales. Delivered projects 5+ weeks in advance. 

No regrets. 

But the next 30 days could be insane.

New office space. Pitching large production. New local team members. Clients increasing workload. And much more. 

I’m in no rush. We are dialed in. And fine being bespoke while other agencies and groups focuses only on margins, productizing, and blame shifting.

We focus on outcomes fast, pricing where we all win, and getting sh*t done.
