How to plan an unforgettable IRL book launch party:

1. Skip the bookstore -- most are too small and cramped. Book an office, an event space, or even a space on a college campus. You want open floor concepts. 

2. Invite LOTS of people! This will probably be your biggest party since your wedding. Get friends, family, colleagues, and clients there. 

3. Drinks and snacks. Nothing fancy, just enough to give people something to do while they mingle.

4. Focus on PEOPLE MEETING PEOPLE. That's the goal. One of my favorite hacks is creating conversation cards for people to pick up at the entrance.

5. Name tags... a must! You don't want people straining to remember names. The best social lubricant since bathtub gin. 

6. SHORT author interview -- A fireside chat, no more than 30 minutes. Then let people get back to mingling 

(Optional: Create a panel. Get a few well known people on stage with the author. It will attract more guests and takes the pressure off the author.)

7. Hire a professional photographer -- Turn the book launch event into marketing/promotion material for months after. Give them a punch list of key photos you want, like the author posing with their spouse. 

(Optional: Hire a videographer too)

8. Send out RSVPs -- don't just expect people to show up. Get invites and follow up with people who haven't registered yet. Don't just show up and pray people will show up... not fun. 

Are in-person book launch parties worth it? I used to be a skeptic, but now I'm 110% on-board. 

IRL events turn your book into an experience. And people are MUCH more likely to tell friends about an experience. Launch parties create avid fans that kickstart your Word-of-Mouth sales flywheel. Ideally, host events in multiple cities.

Oh, bonus tip: Create giant posters of the book cover! Great momento.
