Since 2009, I've been using animation to tell stories that matter. Stories are powerful. They tell us who we are, what we believe in, and how we should relate to the world around us. My life is dedicated to using that power to make the world a better place for everyone in it.

Duke & Duck is the Emmy award-winning content studio I started with my best friend Dave back in 2009. We produce brand videos, social content, explainers, advocacy campaigns, and animation for documentaries. Most of our work is direct to clients where we serve as strategic advisors and content creators, but we also work with select agencies as partners. We have years of experience creating award-winning animated content for household brands, including: Capital One, the ACLU, Nestlé, Patagonia, and National Geographic.

In 2022, I founded Double Scoop Studio with a single goal: To make sure that the next generation has access to stories that put as much emphasis on positive social values and impact as they do on entertainment and turning a profit. We make proprietary content for non-profits who want to reach kids, and develop and produce our own original IP. Our partners include the American Red Cross and PBS Kids.

Here are the 36 things I know for sure:

1. I know I don't know much and that's okay.
2. I know my values and they guide my moments.
3. I know I'm surrounded by so much love and that's pretty neat.
4. I know you can't change people.
5. I know everything you want in life, you already have.
6. I know meditation helps.
7. I know writing is thinking.
8. I know leadership is a privilege and can come from anywhere in the organization.
9. I know happiness is on the other side of vulnerability.
10. I know you can't love someone till you love yourself.
11. I know I'm one lucky SOB.
12. I know I'm 100% responsible for how I respond.
13. I know showing up on time is a competitive advantage.
14. I know following up is the ticket.
15. I know the small things are the big things.
16. I know abundance will set you free.
17. I know not everyone will like you and that's a-okay.

Yesterday I was on a budget call with an agency partner (good people) and they asked a super fair question:

“What would we save if we didn’t fly your stylist in from MN?”

On paper, the answer was pretty straightforward.
About fifteen hundred bucks in flights and hotels.

But that’s only half the math.

What you save in travel, you spend in onboarding a new local stylist from scratch, extra time getting them aligned to boards, talent, and brand, plus more shopping hours, more returns, more back and forth.

All in, that “save” on travel would likely cost closer to tree plus grand in extra labor and friction once a local crew spins up.

Not crazy, but hey, this is a budget meeting.

In this case, our stylist is already in lockstep with the director, has been thinking about these characters for weeks, and is prepped to shop at home and land in LA ready to rumble. That prep is invisible on the bid sheet, but it is very real on set.

Budgets are rarely about one line item.
It’s more like the chain reaction that line item creates.

In the age of “more for less,” if you are on the client or agency side and looking for cuts, a good question to ask is:

“If we pull dollars from here, where will they quietly show up later?”

Most folks hear “customer journey” and think: Ooo neat, more leads.

yup, thats part of it. But it is a small part.

Last week, my buddy Ben Ellenbecker and I ran a little workshop for our mastermind group. Topic: The Customer Journey (exciting!).

One friend in the group is kinda cruising in business. Very niche offer. No lead problem. Little interest in “marketing juju.” I don't blame him, he has other problems.

And yet, once we got into it, the stuff that scratched his itch had nothing to do with more leads or more sales.

We talked about stuff like:
 • Educating customers/partners before kickoff so engagements start smoother and faster
 • Dropping in quick, automated feedback forms during the engagement so you can course-correct in real time

Neither of those touchpoints scream SALES. But they are squarely in the customer journey.

I gave two quick examples we use at CR:

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼
A few years back we did one of those 360 surveys with our team (I think thats what the corporate suits call it). 

Somebody asked, “What makes a good client?”

The theme was pretty obvious...
Good clients are educated clients. Simple as that.

So we made an onboarding video. 

A quick crash course in how production works, what to expect, who does what, and where projects can go sideways. New clients watch it, and suddenly our team’s jobs get easier. 

Less confusion. Faster out the gate. And fewer “wtf” moments.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆
At the end of every project, clients get a short survey. Takes about 30 seconds.

We use it to learn what worked, what did not, how we can improve next time, and it gives clients an easy way to share a testimonial if they want.

Happy clients, repeatable process, and little bites of marketing candy without begging for 'em.

None of this is “top of funnel.” 

But all of it shapes how it feels to work with you. For your customers and for your team doing the real work.

Long story long: the customer journey is not just about squeezing more revenue out of people. When you do it with intention, it can mean happier employees, smooth like butta projects, better stories, and insights you probably would not see otherwise.

Plus, onboarding and retention are like the ugly step kid of the customer journey, and often the most profitable.

??? Something to noodle on as you go into a turkey coma in the next few days: 

you already have a customer journey. The question I ask is… is it intentional or accidental?

I was on set last week and at the end of day 2 our director, Wren Sieber, asked if I had any feedback for her.

I did.

Let me preface this by saying I believe a director’s job is one of the hardest in the world. It can feel like you are going at it alone, but you do not have to. You do, however, have to be open and honest with yourself if you want to keep honing that POV and conviction.

My feedback was nothing major, just a little “set the stage” type of thing that can get glossed over in the hustle and bustle of production. But being the armchair quarterback I am, and having sat in her shoes for ten odd years, I had a take and I felt it necessary not to sugar coat it.

What happened next
A) made me know without a shadow of a doubt she was the one for the job, and
B) warmed my heart.

Wren simply took it in and thanked me for the candor. She followed up and thanked me again for how I gave the feedback. Apparently I did an okay job, which made me feel happy because I am learning as I go, like all of us.

Moments like this remind me that trust, vulnerability, and real reflection are the quiet differentiators in a "go, go, go & your feed is reality" world. Anyone can nod along. Not everyone can ask for the hard notes, sit with them, and then the next day implement and grow with gusto. 

More of that, please.

Wren is a pro in the truest form. I cannot wait to show you what she is whipping up.
