In 2017, I was an investment advisor in a private bank. Although I was comfortable and safe in this job, I wanted more adventure in my career.

I knew that I had a unique set of skills and talents. As an accountant by training, I was comfortable working with numbers and crunching data. But I always enjoyed writing and communicating stories to the world. 

That year, I decided to leave banking and become an entrepreneur. Along the way, I dabbled in a bunch of businesses and learned by trial and error how to harness Facebook & Google to drive leads and sales to these businesses. When my campaigns didn’t work, I’d keep testing until it did. 

After spending hundreds of hours learning copywriting and marketing strategy, I accumulated valuable skills and experience in performance marketing. I realised I could help my clients scale their businesses by implementing these strategies.

In 2022, I decided to take the plunge and pursue my passion for growing businesses by founding Omni Digital, a performance marketing agency that helps clients scale through digital marketing.

Now, I work with e-commerce, home & renovation, and education businesses in Singapore to accelerate their growth using paid Facebook & Google ads.

𝐇𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐌𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬.

That was the sentence that completely caught me off guard.

Last evening, I had the privilege of being one of 43 agency leaders in the room with Anil Wadhwani, Group CEO of Prudential plc.

It was an Agency Networking Night with the top senior management of Prudential Assurance Company Singapore.

We discussed about upcoming initiatives, filled with plenty of joy and laughter since it's still the CNY festive period.

Leaders had to opportunity to engage with the Chiefs of respective departments for open discussions.

What struck me most was how the usual barrier between corporate leadership and the agency force seemed to fade away. 

Sometimes issues get resolved through such casual chats easier. 

We felt heard and understood as leaders on the ground.

Then came the moment I will never forget.

In the middle of our conversation, Anil said he reads my posts.

He further added on 

“Jas, I read all your posts — your exercise, your work, your day-to-day activities.

Truly this is what makes us human.”

I was astonished, deeply humbled.

When I write, I never really know who is reading. 

I don’t chase vanity metrics.

I don’t obsess over impressions.

But that moment reminded me again:

Someone is always reading. 

If my posts can positively influence anybody in any way, then I believe it is worth the time.

This is no different from our profession as a Financial Consultant.

Many assume we share to sell.

But for me, I share with a bigger purpose: 

To Educate and Create Awareness.

Sales is a by-product of doing the right thing consistently.

But I know if we always go with the best intent, this will help more people gain awareness and prevent potential pitfalls.

That is also the purpose of writing.

It is not easy to open up our thoughts publicly. 

It is not easy to show vulnerability. 

It takes courage to share consistently, especially when you are not sure who is listening.

Back at work on Chinese New Year Day 3.

My heart felt heavy despite the festive season. 

"Mel" (pseudonym) is in her mid forties.

A tremendously good mother trying to make life work for herself and 2 primary school kids. 

20 years ago, we were new rookies in the HR team. 

I was the one who first introduced myself:

"Hi I'm Jaslyn! Would you like to grab lunch together?"

Fast forward 20 years later. 

We sat down again this time, in our entirely new identities.

Mum with two kids + Fellow Female Entrepreneur. 

Mel said that I’m the first person she has ever so openly shared her financial situation with.

She wasn’t asking for miracles.

She was asking for clarity.

Sometimes people think divorce is a straightforward process:

Sign Here | Split the assets | Move On

But the truth is divorce requires a lot of thinking through.

Mel deliberated on it for 5 years.

That's because for working mothers, it requires even more strategic planning.

"Where to stay?"

"Can we afford a new house?"

"While I work, who can take care of the kids?"

"Can I afford their tuition fees?"

Every single question almost equates to having $ as a solution.

Yet finances is just a part of the load.

It is the mental load.

It is the emotional wellbeing of the kids who are trying to understand what's happening. 

Today we went back to the drawing board.

We worked out Mel's existing liabilities.

We made sure her protection gaps are closed.

We planned how to park the private matrimonial house sales proceeds safely.

For condo downgraders, there's the 15 month waiting period.

And that waiting period burns cash.

$3,000 per month just for rental while waiting to buy a HDB flat.

On paper, it is “process.”

In real life, it can feel like punishment.

Sometimes single mums are marginalised in ways people don’t talk about.

This conversation brought me back. 

I was on the same journey 7 years ago.

Some days it felt like I was walking through an endless dark tunnel.

But I had to keep walking hoping to see light at the end of it.

Simply because giving up is not even a choice. 

I was luckier in one way.

My profession gave me a path to stabilise faster, buying a house and settling the kids.

While we continue to rebuild our lives and heal together. 

Mel's conversation reminded me again.

Mothers are strong for a reason.

9 full months of "heavy lifting" during pregnancy.

Hours of intense labour pain.

Giving up our body’s nutrients and turning them into breastmilk.

Years of sleep deprivation.

It’s almost like nature quietly built resilience into us.

Just to make us more capable to cope with life's challenges.

Chinese New Year with my team is never just a meal.

We start in the morning 10:00am in the office.

We’ve been on a break since CNY Eve, which was one week ago. 

That first day back in office hits differently.

It symbolises 开工大吉 : A Fresh 2026 year and beginning. 

Before all our meetings resume, we gather to sincerely wishes each another.

Every year, I prepare the 开工红包 myself.

I would source for the most meaningful ref packets. 
 
Each red packet comes with handwritten blessings for each team members. 

Intentional and courage for the quiet ones. 

Bigger vision for the steady ones.

Relentless focus for the high performers.

The team queues up one by one to exchange greetings.

They offer their blessings to me (their leader)

Whilst I pass them the red packet.

It is never about the amount inside.

It is about the Chinese culture and our values. 

Starting the year aligned and with purpose. 

We wrapped up the morning session with a good lunch feast. 

And of course, our standard yusheng.

High tossing with Loud Blessings 

Huat ah.

步步高升.

生意兴隆.

The higher the toss, the higher the growth.

Prosperity in business.

Prosperity in health.

Prosperity in relationships.

May everyone have 马到成功.

May opportunities gallop towards you.

May you run strong with 龙马精神.

And may this year be bold, abundant and worth celebrating.

3 years ago, a couple in their late-forties sat across me, looking worried. 

They had approached me after watching me done retirement planning for many couples. 

Previously they worked with a financial representative who often went radio silent. 

Their investment plans which they bought over the years had plummeted significantly from their original value. 

With a goal to retire at 55, the clock was ticking.

This couple is DINK (dual income, no kids). 

Every few months, they travel to run marathons around the world. 

To them, retirement isn't about leaving a legacy or maximising death benefits.

It's all about this word "FREEDOM". 

The freedom to travel, to stay healthy for each other, and to enjoy all the fun experiences.

They are the bona-fide "Die with Zero" squeezing every experience out of this lifetime.

When we met, my priority was simple: make sure they're in good hands and they can retire as what they planned. 

Here's what we did:

✅ Gathered Data & Reviewed everything. 

There was no product pitching.

We went through each investment plan and scoured all plan details and funds fund allocation line by line.

✅ Re-mapped their retirement plan. 

I integrated CPF LIFE as a foundational pillar, which offers us a steady, predictable income.

This forms the foundational base of their retirement strategy.

✅ Defined their retirement number. 

We determined their desired monthly income and determined the gaps.

They are not fancy meal types, but they want the flexibility to travel freely.  

✅ Built a feasible path forward

The goal is to gradually replace active income with passive income, shifting from growth to stability as they approach 55.

✅ Leveraged what they already had. 

They own 2 private properties with one of them fully paid off. 

This gave them security and options.

Today, three years later:

They're on back on track and reaching their retirement goal soon.

They understand that financial discipline today (delayed gratification) means ultimate freedom tomorrow.

If you're in your 40s or 50s and feel uncertain about your retirement readiness, ask yourself if you're doing this:

𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐝 $17 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐭 𝐓𝐨 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐈𝐭.

She had $17 million assets with $2.6 million in cash sitting in the bank.

With strategic foresight, she owned properties and stocks amassing massive wealth over decades.

Yet in her final years, she lived frugally without anybody properly taking care of her.

This was an 87-year-old lady whose case was brought to light in yesterday’s Sunday Times.

She even has to rely on condo management to help her find her misplaced handphone.

Imagine an elderly woman with 8-figure wealth seeking help from outsiders to perform simple daily tasks.

Her home was described as cluttered and unsanitary despite the resources available to her.

I find that deeply heartbreaking.

Not because she lacked money, but because she did not utilise it for her own dignity and comfort.

She earned every dollar through a lifetime of focus and perseverance.

But she was not the one who truly got to enjoy it.

Instead, her 62-year-old son living in Australia and her 91-year-old brother fought over the $17 million estate.

Her 91-year-old brother, who would eventually pass those assets to his own son.

Imagine 3 generations circling the same pool of wealth while the woman who built it could not even enjoy proper support.

This case made me ponder deeply:

What is the point of amassing so much wealth if you do not know how to utilise it properly?

It could have defeated the very purpose of building it in the first place.

I find it a shame when a lifetime of discipline and achievement is destroyed because adequate planning was not done early.

For many successful professionals, wealth is a testament to their focus and resilience.

Yet without clear governance, medical crises or cognitive deterioration can just eradicate decades of hard work in a single moment.

That is why my professional advisory with clients spans across 3 stages:

1. Wealth Protection ensures that a medical event does not destroy what you have painstakingly built.

2. Wealth Management focuses on helping you grow and compound what you have earned while you are still strong and capable.

Money should give you dignity, comfort, and control in your later years.

To me, the real tragedy is not dying without money.

The real tragedy is building it your entire life and never allowing it to serve you.

What I’m wearing today reminds me of this quote: 

The grass is always greener on the other side (until you check the water bill). 

I realise the “greener” was just a matter of perspective.

I learnt this with Silver.

We’ve all seen the bull run on silver, isn’t it? 

I put in $1,000 when silver was around $64 last year October. 

Within 3 months, it spiked to $147.

On paper, my $1,000 became about $2,297.

A gain of about $1,297.

I felt smart.

Not because of the money.

Because of the feeling of being right.

So I added a lump sum near the top price. 

And and then silver recently crashed to $94.

The profits didn’t just shrink.

They evaporated overnight. 🥹

What surprised me most wasn’t the chart.

It was me.

I started checking prices daily often.

My mood swings like a pendulum. 

That’s when an epiphany hit me. 

I don’t like roller coasters, not in my life or finances. 

Silver is up to $103 again today.

But I’m not celebrating yet because it’s still a loss for my 2nd lump sum top up. 

Of course not to forget the emotional rides.

My saving grace was gold.

I bought gold last year too, alongside with Silver. 

Though the rise is slower, it’s also steadier. 

So far it’s up about 20% for me.

Here’s what I want to say to anyone chasing the “greener” asset.

The grass isn’t greener where returns are higher.

The grass is greener where you can stay consistent.

Where you can sleep in peace. 

At the end of the day, even if returns were zero, putting money aside still wins for me because:

1. Keeps scammers and their filthy hands away from our idle cash.

2. Prevents potential deferred spending when our bank balance looks NICE. 

And yes, returns matter.

Just not more than peace.

That is why I prefer stable, structured investing.

That is why I like the way I run my own portfolio.

Just boring and consistently predictable.

And over time, it has averaged about 8% to 10% a year.

All because I’m not chasing greener grass.

I’m building a beautiful garden I can actually live in.
