I love turning ideas into companies - and I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who share the same passion. 

Right now, I’m fully focused on Heizma. What started as an idea in December 2023 turned into a company by March 2024. By the end of that year, we had reached €10M in sales and installed over 500 heat pumps. Bootstrapped.

Today, Heizma is Austria’s leading full-service electrification provider, offering heat pumps, solar panels, batteries, EV chargers, air conditioning, energy management, and an energy community to help our customers access the cleanest and most affordable energy possible.


I’ve been chasing ideas and turning them into businesses for as long as I can remember - from flipping goods at flea markets at age 7 to large-scale game key reselling at 15 (XX.XXX€ monthly revenue), which eventually led me to Bitcoin.

What followed were multiple business ideas during my university years, until my early touchpoints with Bitcoin led me to build Coinpanion. The idea? So simple it actually worked: Crypto for people who don’t want to follow charts - just set it, forget it, and let it ride. (hello #ETFs for crypto)

So I did what every 21-year-old entrepreneurial student does: I stopped studying (eventually finished later) and dove headfirst into the rollercoaster. We built a team of up to 40, expanded into 3 countries (Austria, Germany, and Poland), reached 25,000 customers, and raised €6M in funding.

In 2023, we were fortunate to successfully exit the company to Revix, which - together with a consortium of crypto platforms - became Altify, now serving a large number of customers across Africa and Europe.

With no break at all, things unfolded as they did, and I found myself in the next adventure: Heizma - and honestly, I love it every day. 

Occasionally, I also invest in other startups via morgen ventures, but the truth is:
I’m a founder first, investor second - and right now, it’s heads-down building time.

For any angel investor, this is pure paradise. I feel so grateful for the trust and energy from founders reaching out!

Now comes the real work: going through every message & deck, finding the teams that match our focus, and setting up first calls. Laura Modre and I are working really hard! Not sitting relaxed at the couch anymore. 😉

I’m the angel investor telling you: your customers should finance your startup, not just me❗

I know, it sounds strange coming from someone who invests in early-stage founders.

But here’s the truth:

👉 Venture capital should help you get clients faster, not replace them.
👉 Raising money is NOT your business model.
👉 Most companies do not need external capital to survive.
👉 The VC model is only suitable for a specific type of startup.

There are times when investor money is needed:

→ Deeptech, space, biotech or any vertical with huge upfront costs.
→ Very short time to market.

But when you take investor money, everything changes:

✔️ You promise big outcomes.
✔️ You need to raise more, grow more, chase bigger goals.
✔️ You lose the chance to build slowly or sell for a smaller exit (which can still make you very happy!).

We at ROI VENTURES can only invest in founders who know this dynamic and choose VC for the right reasons.

There are also other ways to fund your startup:

👉 Charge for consulting & onboarding and learn from your clients.
👉 Get pilots and design partners and make them pay.
👉 Build a financial buffer to survive 6-12 months without a salary.

The goal is always to get paying clients. 💸 VC is only ONE way to get there.

Out of 500 messages, only 18 startups made it to a first call. 😳 Here's why:

My last post resulted in a high number of founders contacting us at ROI VENTURES, as we are actively looking to invest in two to three more start-ups this year.

Unfortunately, most of the founders who contacted us did not fit our investment focus. Many were US-based, and others were in verticals that we don't usually invest in, such as Web3/Blockchain, SportsTech and Entertainment. 

Some sent very unclear messages about their companies and we could not quickly determine whether there was a fit or whether they had only just had an idea.

Even if there is a fit, there are many other factors that influence our final investment decision.

And often there is nothing wrong with the startup we are reviewing, it is just the fact that someone else is a better fit❗️

We only have a calls with the top 3% of all the startups we see.

And we only invest in the top 0.5%. So there is a good chance that we will invest in at least 2-3 of the 15 startups we are currently meeting. 💸

Nothing personal, this is how the industry works. A NO is a natural part of the investment process.

What stands out in the companies we talk to:

👉 Very strong founder background (serial founder, industry experience)
👉 DM was on point (personal, informative, clear ask)
👉 Strong alignment with our investment focus (software infrastructure, deep tech) 
👉 Momentum in their funding round & early traction

In venture capital, “no” often just means “not now.”
Your reaction decides if it becomes "never" or "later." 😳

I see both types of replies after a rejection message:

👉 Thanks for the reply. Can I add you to my investor's newsletter?
or
👉 You just made a stupid decision.
👉 You don’t understand anything about X.

I understand the emotion.

You work on your startup day and night.
You have 100% conviction.
Then an investor does not share that conviction.

That hurts. 😢

But from the investor side, sometimes a “no” can also mean “not now”❗️

At ROI VENTURES, we already invested in two startups where we first said no. Later the situation changed, they came back, and we joined the round.

A good reply helped. A rude reply killed the chance.

Here is what helps after a no:

1️⃣ Stay calm and say thank you
“Thanks for the time and feedback. I understand your focus and hope we can stay in touch.”

2️⃣ Ask for 1–2 clear reasons
“Is there one thing you would need to see from us to re‑evaluate in the future?”

3️⃣ If there is a potential future fit, keep them in your update loop
Send a short update mail every 6–8 weeks:
→ new customers
→ product progress
→ team news

You turn “not now” into “maybe later”. Which is also really important to build a relationship with later stage investors.

We made our first investment in a company that we got in touch with via a cold LinkedIn DM. Here's what caught my attention. 🔍

I get a LOT of cold messages. My inbox is a wild place. Most are generic, copy-paste, or just not a fit.

But every now and then, I spot something special.

Great founders usually find a warm intro. It’s the classic advice: “Get someone to vouch for you.” Makes sense-warm intros are a filter, a shortcut to trust, a way to stand out.

But if you want to find the best deals, you can’t only wait for intros. You have to do the work. You have to dig through the haystack for that one needle ❗ 

For me, that means reading every message in my LinkedIN inbox. (Yes, all of them.) About 1-2 stand out in every 100. Most weeks, nothing. But sometimes? You get a message like this:

Hi Laura,

I am David, previously the founder and CTO of a payments gateway that was acquired. I am at it again with the same co-founders.

I saw your message that you are looking for another company raising their first round. Would be great to connect on that.

No fluff. No fake excitement. Just:

✔️ Clear track record (serial founder, real exit)
✔️ Same co-founder team (BIG plus)
✔️ Referenced my own post (shows he did his reseach)
✔️ Direct, but personal

I was instantly curious. I wanted to know what he was building now.

Most “VC tools” miss the only thing we really care about: structuring chaotic dealflow from WhatsApp, LinkedIn and Mail. 😬 

At ROI VENTURES, our reality looks like this:

A goal to get everything into our CRM (folk) neat and tidy

The gap between those two worlds is huge.

Here is how our process works today and where tools fail us:

1️⃣ Getting all decks into our CRM

Right now we solve it with:

👉 A Tally form that connects to folk
👉 Manual copy-paste from LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Mail

We have not found a tool that pulls all decks into folk in a structured way and can access different communication channels.

2️⃣ Pre-assessing

We do not need AI summaries or “smart scores”.
We are still keen to access ourselves if there is a fit, but we need some hard filters.

Many tools want us to upload decks into their platform. We do not want another isolated system. We want something that works with our CRM.

3️⃣ Call preparation

The first call is where we decide if we go deeper or not.
We prepare a lot of detailed questions today with ChatGPT.

I would love a tool that:

👉 Reads the deck
👉 Maps competition and market
👉 Suggests very specific questions for that founder

This should also be integrated, of course, and not an isolated solution. 

We do not need tools for DD, deal sharing or portfolio monitoring.
Our pain is before all of that: structuring dealflow and nailing the first call.
