Every time you stop to fix something, you're applying the brakes.

And starting from zero tomorrow is harder than continuing at 10mph today.

I've written 30,000 words in 5 days before, because I worked myself up to wrecking ball speed.

For once, procrastination is your friend. 

You're only allowed to fix the mess AFTER you're done with a draft.

Those are tomorrow's problems.

Today's job: push the boulder.

It's been almost a year since I threw a match on the gasoline-soaked metaphor of my writing career.

After two years of burnout, I realized there had to be something more.

And it wasn't something I could find at the end of writing another fiction book.

I needed to take a different path.

At 33, I looked around online. And what I saw froze me in my tracks:

People years younger with less than half my writing experience, making 10x the income.

People my age with massive, life-changing audiences and businesses.

For a minute, I panicked. I was frustrated, angry, bitter.

On my current trajectory, I faced a harsh truth: chances were I wouldn't become the next Brandon Sanderson.

So I did what any insane person would do:

I burned the boats.

It wasn't easy.

I went from writing 2-3 books a year to one.

And doubled down on my personal brand outside of being a fantasy author.

After eleven years, I had to learn who else I could be online.

In many ways, I became a beginner again.

I swallowed my pride. I asked questions. I made mistakes.

At first, I wrote a bunch of long-winded, crappy content.

Funny thing was, those lessons I learned writing fiction were things that resonated most with people.

What got me here isn't the only thing getting me there.

But it still matters.

For anyone out there who thinks they can't call an audible or start over again:

You're wrong.

"We dropped 140 bucks on these, why is their logo on it?"

^ Actual conversation with my wife about our Christmas cards.

It's that time of year again.

As I saw the final mockups, my eyes were drawn past the photo of our loving family + an irate one and a half year-old.

There it was: the Shutterfly logo.

My wife patiently explained there wasn't an option to remove it.

As a marketer, I gave them a nod of respect. As a buyer, I was annoyed.

Soon enough, they came in the mail.

Then Brianna spotted the problem: our 4-year-old's underwear was showing past her shorts in the back photo.

Neither of us felt comfortable sending it out.

Before we torched the whole stack and started over, my wife contacted Shutterfly.

She explained the situation.

Their response? "No problem, you can reorder them for free."

Suddenly, I didn't care about the logo on the card anymore.

The moral of the story here isn't the cost of inflation on holiday paper goods.

It's that your everyday interactions make or break you as a brand. 

Shutterfly turned an annoyed customer into an advocate with one sentence.

While I'm happy not to burn another $140, it wasn't about the money.

Customer service aside, if you treat people well as a principle, they'll come back more often than not.

Or at the very least, say nice things about you in a LinkedIn post.

Standing between a $300 replica cowboy hat and a $60 decorative pillow in Texas last week, I finally understood how empires are made.

What John Wayne and the Fixer Upper couple taught me about culture & character creation:

I ditched writing content last week to eat literal pounds of brisket and tacos in Texas.

When I wasn't in a food coma, we also did a little sightseeing.

One stop was the John Wayne Exhibit at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Another was the Magnolia Silos in Waco, headquarters of the lifestyle brand by power couple Chip & Joanna Gaines.

Aside from both being a few hours drive of one another, the two experiences couldn't have been more different:

one was full of cowboy costumes, movie clips, and guns.
the other featured cupcakes and ridiculous amounts of home decor.

Sipping on overpriced sweet tea while my wife scored new Christmas ornaments, all I could think about were the empires built on these two brands.

Both represented something more than a tourist attraction.

What the larger-than-life Western persona of a South California actor and the entrepreneur couple created were entire cultures.

One quote from John Wayne stood out to me:

“I've found the character the average man wants himself, his brother or his kid to be. It's the same type of guy the average wife wants for her husband."

We talk about "branding" like it's all about colors and fonts on the outside and zany catchphrases on the inside.

Real branding is about the culture you build, the movement you foster, and the characters you create.

It's the emotions people can't help but feel when they interact with these things.

People go to the Silos in Waco, Texas to live and experience the Magnolia brand.

(and end up buying their 4 year-old daughter a Joanna Gaines Barbie—she has a BARBIE)

People buy the John Wayne Handbook For Men (real thing) or a $300 replica Stetson because they want to capture a slice of that character.

Your "brand" isn't a clever logo and a clean landing page layout.

You have to craft something people will believe in.

The next time you think about your brand, stop worrying about what people see.

Focus on what you make them feel.
