I've built synthetic agency in products from the ground up, launched ventures in the field, performed academic research and contributed to think tanks, wrote The Ethics of AI, and advised 100+ leaders over the past 12 years.
I’ve learned that, while most people attribute failure modes to technicalities or talent, the true failure is philosophical.

The products that succeeded long term had teams who did not skip the hard questions. They built synthetic agency when they had to, not because they just could. They solved real problems by listening to their customers without chasing trends.

Hilal Mengi

On the first day back to school, I quietly prayed for my children to be seated in classes aligned with their purpose, where they are valued, heard and never have to shrink. 

I do more than pray, though. 

On one windy Dubai morning a lesson emerged in the first 15 minutes of watching my son at soccer camp. Coffee in hand, I planned to show up and let him know that by staying a little extra while I reinforce that no matter the outcomes, he’s my all time favourite footballer. 

And on this windy day he reminded me it’s not just because he calls me mum. 

I got to witness resilience in action. Resilience isn't just about showing up. It's about how fast you get up.

For too long, we've been teaching boys (and women) to suppress their natural drive, labeling it as rough, competitive or aggressive. 

We neuter their potential in the name of politeness, creating people who are psychologically ashamed of their own power.

I saw a different kind of lesson play out.

In the first picture below, you can see my son sitting out; losing the warm up game. 

The real victory wasn't that he won. 

The victory was in the moments in between.

Here is what I learned from watching him:
1/ Motivation is overrated. Turning up is easy. Learning starts when you have to sit with discomfort, failure, or loss.

2/ Resilience is a stopwatch. It’s not just about bouncing back. It's about shortening the length of time it takes to go from sitting in defeat to taking new action.

 3/ Win loving the discomfort. Winning isn't the end game. The goal is to challenge yourself to associate that difficult, gritty feeling with progress and even fun.

Sports provide a unique platform as a place where high energy can become discipline, and where we can practice shortening that discomfort-to-action loop in a supportive community.

Perhaps the lesson waiting for me to witness was not coincidence. It reassured me that consistent coaching and unapologetic embrace of strengths is growth and development. 

I spent the latter quarter of 2025 helping women who feel stuck re-engage with their power and own their narrative. If you are feeling that friction right now, remember that growth is cyclical. 

If you’re feeling uncomfortable, that’s exactly where having a grounding partner can propel you into success for 2026.

Whatever stage of the cycle you are in, you don't have to navigate it alone.
