I don't know if this is 100% true,
but as leaders, we should pay attention. 

I was an awful manager when I first led people. 

I made it about me - not my team.
I remember feeling the title should come with automatic respect.
That it was a badge of accomplishment. And diminishing the new responsibility. 

But leadership isn’t status. It’s service.

It means putting your team before yourself.
And showing up for them, especially when it’s hard.

I don’t always get it right.
I know I lean out when I need to lean in. 
I get too particular when I should let things go.
I cling to being right, when I should be learning.

But every day, I try to be someone my team is grateful to have worked with.

Someone they’ve learned from.
Someone who believed in them.
Someone who challenged them to grow. 
And someone who had their back.

Here are 7 lessons I've learnt, becoming this type of leader:

1. Pressure is a privilege. 
↳ Protecting your team from unnecessary pressure is just as important as applying the right amount to stretch.

2. Emotional intelligence matters as much as mental intelligence. 
↳ Leading is about people. Knowing when to push someone vs when to support creates real growth. 

3. Vulnerability is a strength. 
↳ I don't have all the answers. I get things wrong. And saying that out loud builds trust.

4. No two moments are the same. 
↳ One person in two different moments may need two different versions of me. In one type of work, I may need to be directive. In another, I need to stay away!

5. I won't always get it right (and it's wrong if I do).
↳ Being surrounded by people smarter than me is a gift, not a threat.

6. Honest conversations will always build strong relationships
↳ Assumptions of others' intent is the death of relationships. Instead of sitting in them, just ask.

7. Empathy is the biggest super-power of a leader
↳ We’re all carrying invisible weight. Great leaders create space for people to be human, without having to pretend they’re not.

I used to hide my authentic self at work. 
Afraid I didn’t fit the typical mould of a 'leader'.

But over time, I realised the very things I used to downplay (my casual nature, warmth and emotional intuition), were what made me effective.

Bringing a bubbly attitude to meetings. 
Using humor to ease tension. 
Having heartfelt, vulnerable conversations.

These were the qualities that have supported my growth.

Here are 6 simple EQ habits that helped me lead with authenticity, and might help you too:

1. Ask about their weekend.
Show interest in people’s lives beyond work. When you show genuine care, it builds trust. 

2. Pause, then respond.
Between stimulus and response is your power to choose. Take a breath before you react.

3. Be vulnerable.
You don’t need all the answers. Your openness gives others permission to be real too.

4. Say thank you.
A simple, authentic, specific note goes can leave a lasting impact on other people. 

5. Assume good intent.
Curiosity over judgment. Most people aren’t out to get you.

6. Smile and nod.
When someone’s presenting - encourage them. It makes a huge difference.

With more EQ at work, it becomes a much more enjoyable space to be.

Many don’t know this about me:
I’m half Japanese.

As a kid, I didn’t really appreciate how cool that was.

Instead of seeing it as something special, I focused on being the “odd one out”. 
Because I was different.

Now? 
I feel incredibly lucky to experience two cultures. 
(And since moving to Ireland, a third!)

Japanese culture, has shaped who I am - how I live, how I think, how I lead.
I've learnt so much from their discipline, grace and resliience.

Here are 7 concepts (and sayings) that continue to guide me, at home, and at work:

1. Gaman suru 我慢する
↳ I always hear my mum say call this to me – lean into challenge and hold strong.
↳ At work: When things get tough, respond (don’t react) with calm and grace.

2. Ikigai 生き甲斐
↳ Find daily meaning.
↳ The intersection of what you love, what you’re great at, and what others value.

3. Misogi 禊
↳ An anient practice of purification through COLD water immersion.
↳ Take on stretch challenges that feel uncomfortable, but purposeful.

4. Kintsugi 金継ぎ
↳ The art of repairing broken crockery with gold to highlight flaws.
↳ Celebrate failure. 

5. Shikata ga nai 仕方がない
↳ Another phrase I hear in my mum's voice - often in response to my complaints. 
↳ Let go of what you can’t control. Focus on what you can.

6. Kaizen 改善
↳ Small improvements every day. 1% better adds up.

7. Itadakimasu いただきます
↳ Before every meal, we’d put our hands together and say this.
↳ Everyone should take a moment to appreciate their food.

Every culture holds wisdom.
These are just a few that help me stay grounded and grow.

I’ve found the smallest thank you's - the ones no one else hears - are often the ones people remember most.

1. Send a Slack message to someone who’s not expecting it.
↳ Keep it specific.
↳ “Hey [Name], I’ve noticed how much effort you’ve put into [X]. It’s making a real difference, and I just wanted to say thank you.”

2. Make a quick Friday phone call.
↳ Let a team member know they’re doing a fantastic job.
↳ No agenda. Just appreciation.
↳ They’ll go into the weekend with a huge grin.

3. Acknowledge how difficult something is.
↳ “I know this project’s been intense. It’s not easy, and you’re doing a great job.”

Or at home...

4. Recognise a considered gesture from your partner.
↳ “You made this meal because you know I love it. That means a lot - thank you.”

5. Leave a handwritten note.
↳ It might feel old-school, but it has impact.

Hard truth: 
Every easy decision you make today, 
Makes life harder for yourself tomorrow.

Over the holidays, I would set my alarm for 630am. Giving me 90 minutes before my son would wake. 

Time I intended to use well.

Exercise. 
Meditate. 
Journal. 

Instead? Most days, I would hit snooze. 

Dark winter mornings made it easy to stay in bed. And to be fair, I needed rest. 

But the result of the extra snooze... 
= Lethargic. 
= I felt slow.
= Self-resentment.

On the few days I did get up and move, I felt energised. Present. Happier.

I recently came across this concept... 

Easy decisions make a hard life. 
Hard decisions make an easy life. 

↳ It's easier to sleep in than to move
↳ Easier to scroll than to read
↳ Easier to eat pasta vs a salad
↳ Easier to blame others than accept fault

But every time we take the “easy” path,
we borrow comfort from our future selves.

And when we choose the “hard” path,
we create more ease in the long term.

Want to be healthy? 
Eat healthy foods and prioritise movement.

Want career growth? 
Lean into discomfort. Learn new skills. Raise your hand.

Want stronger relationships?
Take responsibility. Say the hard thing. Apologise first.

Big changes are built on micro-decisions.

Here are some of the harder decisions I'm committing to this year:
↳ Read before sleep
↳ In bed by 10pm
↳ Apologising when I’ve been reactive
↳ Have more honest conversations

Why?
Because every hard decision now
is a gift to the future me.

How to fast-track your career

One question that can make or break an interview: 

What’s on your development plan? 

Why it matters: 
↳ Shows self-awareness
↳ Signals ambition
↳ Reveals initiative
↳ Tells me if I can help you grow 

Writing down your goals significantly increases the odds you’ll achieve them. 

And yet, most people skip it. It feels hard. 
Or they “don’t have time.” 

To help, I've created this guide so you can write a solid plan in 2 hours flat. 
And given it's January, now is the perfect time to do it. 

Use this to set your direction for 2026:

✅ Step 1: Self-reflect (15 mins)
Ask yourself:
• What would I love to do next?
• What roles would I love for 2 roles time?
• Where do I feel strongest?
• What do I want to be known for 1 year from now?

✅ Step 2: Seek feedback (15 mins)
Reach out to 3–5 trusted colleagues or mentors. Ask:
• What’s my “zone of genius”?
• Where do you think I could stretch?

✅ Step 3: Choose your 3 focus areas (30 mins)
Pick 3 development priorities, ideally a mix of:
• Technical skills
• Leadership skills
• Exposure/experience goals
(Think: stakeholder influence, visibility, decision-making.)

✅ Step 4: Write it down (60 mins)
It doesn’t have to be pretty. But it does have to be written.
Use whatever format suits you:
• A structured doc
• A rough email to yourself
• A voice memo or slide deck

Some additional tips to help get this done: 
• 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲-𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝗶𝘁. Create the block of time in your calendar. If you don't, you'll never do it. 
• 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Go to a café or park. Somewhere you can create space to think differently.
• 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁. Creating accountability & tracking progress increases likelihood of achieving your goals.

And here’s one more mindset shift:
Don’t tie your goal to one role by one date.

Why?
1. New roles require two things: You growing into it and the opportunity being available. Don’t set yourself up to fail because of bad timing.

2. Being too locked into a single title might make you miss better-fit opportunities. Focus on the types of roles you'd like and the skills they require.

You don't need a detailed 5 year plan. Just clarity on where to grow now.

Emotional intelligence is a superpower. 
At work. At home. In life. 

Why? 
Because emotionally intelligent people don’t ignore their feelings, they process them.

They cry when they need to.
They feel sadness, frustration, fear.
And they move through those emotions, instead of letting them fester.

Because if we don’t?
If we avoid or suppress them?
They don’t go away. They grow.

A feeling becomes a mood.
A mood distorts your day.
Suddenly, you’re snapping at your partner, withdrawing from friends, or struggling to think clearly at work.

Have you ever felt this?
Something has made you upset... or angry. 
And instead of sitting with it - you've squashed it. 
Pushed it away. 
Pretended like it didn't exist. 
Distracted yourself.

You thought you were being strong. 
You thought you were being stoic. 
You thought you were being resilient. 

But then…
The smallest things start to trigger you.
You get upset out of nowhere.
You don’t feel like yourself anymore.

I used to be like this. 
I used to think having emotions was weak. 
That being 'emotional' made me 'unhinged'. 

It's ridiculous. 
Having emotions is human. 
Feeling them is strong. 
And processing them is mature, smart and productive.

Emotionally intelligent people feel their feelings.
They process them - then let them go.
And by doing so, they keep a clear head.

So, if you're someone who usually likes to squash emotion down, see this post as permission to feel whatever you need to right now. 
Then. Let it go. ☺️

A gentle reminder for anyone questioning their worth:

Don’t let anyone else dull your light.

It’s so easy to let others’ judgment - or even just our perception of their judgment - shape how we see ourselves.

Here’s what I remind myself if others are critical:

1. We don’t truly know what others are thinking. 
Most of it is just stories in our heads.

2. Even if others are judging us, it's usually a projection of their own wants, wounds, or unprocessed work.

I used to often worry about what other people thought. I'm a people pleaser at heart!

But here’s the truth I've come to realise: It’s not about me.

If someone doesn’t agree with what I say, or like how I show up, it's a reflection of them, not me. 

Of course I'll always do my best to make others feel comfortable, but that doesn't mean compromising my values, beliefs or personality.

Here are five practices that help me protect my energy:

1. Get curious, not defensive. 
Ask the question: “I wonder what’s going on for them?” This reframe softens the sting.

2. Practice forgiveness. 
When you realise holding onto resentment takes up your own energy, it's easier to let things go. 

3. Reset your nervous system. 
Inhale for 4, exhale for 8 - like you’re breathing through a strawer. When your body is calm, your thoughts get clearer.

4. Re-anchor to your intent.
Remind yourself of your positive intent. Use that as fuel to keep going. 

5. Review your circle. 
Spend more time with people who lift you up than those who drain you. Your environment matters.

A reminder for all leaders:
Great teams aren’t built on talent alone.

Capability shows up in a lot of ways.
Yes, experience and knowledge help.

But ultimately, we need people others want to work with.

People who:
• Encourage others
• Lift others up
• Bring out the best in those around them

A high-performance team isn’t just a collection of top performers.

It’s a team where trust is built, people celebrate each other, and wins are shared.

But hire for the environment they will create.
Hire for the ripple effect this person will have on others.
