Your co-worker or friend who just got laid off didn’t die.

You can still reach out to them. 

They simply lost their job.

Same person. Same interests. Same personality. Just in need of a job. 

So even if you have survivor’s guilt at still being employed, or don’t know what to say
Or have one of a million other excuses…

Don’t ignore them. Reach out. Say you’re sorry. Offer to help. Offer connections. Offer to listen.  Offer a recommendation. 

When I lost my job so many people disappeared. 💨 gone.  Nothing makes you feel worse than thinking it’s your fault. 

Thinking all you did and build was for nothing. 

Laid off people aren’t contagious.   They’re just in need of a job.

Be a good human.

PS: If you’ve seen this before it’s because I wrote it a year ago, and  I post numerous times a month, because I knew that loneliness and it’s worth repeating and reminding

I got laid off.


Not “restructured.” Not “impacted.”

Laid. Off.  It first happened almost 6 years ago.

And then again in 2023. Same feelings 

My email said Team Updste and I suddenly knew. I asked my boss if I needed to prepare anything. She said no. 

Suddenly my title, my meetings, my to-do list were all gone.

At first, I panicked.

Who was I without the job that defined me?
Without the team that made me feel seen?

For a few days, I did what most people do — spiraled.

Refreshed job boards. Compared myself to everyone who looked “fine.”

Pretended I was okay when I wasn’t.
Then one morning I asked myself a better question:

“What if I was MORE than any one me job?

That changed everything.

I started talking to people instead of applying to everything.
I stopped chasing the next paycheck and started chasing alignment.

Until of course I realized pay runs out quickly. But I still had MY voice.

And little by little, I found my voice again.
If you’re reading this and just got laid off — breathe.

You’re not starting over.
You’re starting from experience.

Good humans rise again.

PS: I am now happily employed but two layoffs in 5 years and I get it.   THIS is what inspired me to be a life and career coach - my life passion

It always starts with a quick chat.
Or a “calendar update.”
And suddenly… you’re not on the invite list anymore.

Layoffs don’t care how good you are.
They don’t care how long you’ve been loyal.
Or how many late nights you worked.

They happen every day.
To smart people. Kind people. People who gave everything and thought they were safe.

So before it’s you…. prepare.

✅ Document your impact.
Write down the results, projects, and wins you drove.

✅ Reconnect with your network.
Don’t wait until you need something. Stay visible now.

✅ Clean up your LinkedIn.
Make sure your story reflects who you are beyond your title.

✅ Get clear on your story.
What you do. Who you help. Why it matters.

✅ Build something that belongs to you.
A personal brand. A side project. A voice.

Because job security isn’t a title anymore, it’s ownership of your story.

Protect your peace.
Protect your purpose.
Protect your plan B.

Companies don’t want to hire job hoppers. 

Yet I know a few people I know who were laid off in the last few weeks who had only been at their jobs a few months. 

So it’s ok to lay people off soon after they start a new job (basically causing a short term stint on a resume) 

But it’s not ok for employees to job hop for new or better opportunities?

Mmhmm…

Make it make sense

PS: This is from someone who stayed at one job for 15 years before I was laid off, another for 3 before I was laid off. I don’t job hop but… hypocrisy stinks

Reports say Amazon is cutting 30,000 jobs beginning this week. 

30,000 lives upended.

30,000 people thrown into an already over-saturated market. 

30,000 people even with severance worrying what-if at the holidays if they don’t land a job before then. 

Layoffs aren’t ending. The market isn’t getting stronger. AI whether a credible reason or an excuse is going to only change the landscape. 

If you’re out of work and looking please make sure you’re detailed about what you are looking for — I’ll do anything doesn’t help.

And if you’re employed? Make sure you stay engaged, relevant, and create that brag book now while you remember not when you’re forced to. 

And update your resume and LinkedIn profile. 

Networking because you want to not because you have to is always the best way.

If you think Sundays are relaxing, you probably don’t have teenagers.

By 8 p.m., one teenager is crying over a Google Doc that “won’t save.”

Another announces some project due tomorrow that involves a trifold board. 

And I’m sitting there trying to remember if I switched the laundry, paid the sports fee, or replied to my boss’s email.

Meanwhile, Teams chat at work is already lighting up with “quick Monday morning questions.”

There are no quick questions.
Not for me. Not for any working mom trying to survive both corporate deadlines and teenage drama.

Sunday night is not self-care.
It’s crisis management with a side of meal-planning delusion.

But we’ll still show up tomorrow, hair washed (maybe) and pretending we have it all together.

Because working moms don’t get weekends off.

We just change uniforms.

People are hurting.  Unemployed. With kids who deserve magic and they do too. 

I want to do a holiday food, toy, and gift drive for laid off parents who need some help with Thanksgiving and or winter holidays for their kids and themselves (and pets too!)

Who brag all day long. But you probably have something to ACTUALLY brag about. 

Don’t be shy. Now is your time to shine. 

On your resume. 

On your profile. 

In your posts. 

In networking. 

Tell your story, and don’t forget the impact

I had a long conversation with a total stranger before work this morning. 

And it made my day. 

She’s a college freshman at my alma mater Syracuse University and I agreed to chat with her as part of the alumni mentorship program.

She’s undecided on her major, but thinking about journalism.

She wanted advice. 

We talked about careers, storytelling, confidence, and how to start building a network before she even knows exactly where she’s headed.

At the end she said, “That was amazing advice. You’ve given me so much to think about.”

And that right there? That’s why I’ll always make time for conversations like this.

Because helping someone see their own potential before they even believe it themselves fills me more than any metric or title ever could.

Mentorship doesn’t have to be formal.
It’s a message. A call. A conversation.

Be who you needed when you were younger.

Be a good human 

Have you ever had a good mentor? Do you mentor others?

Once you’ve been laid off, you wonder forever.. when it’ll happen again.  

Not even IF it’ll happen again. 



But I won't obsess over it. 

There's a difference.  

Two layoffs in 4 years; one after 15 years and one after 2 years of non-stop work have forever changed me.  Gone are the days I believe in safety or work harder and longer hours and you will be "ok." 

My naivete that I am safe because I bring results, dissipated after 15 years at one company when I was laid off after seeing colleagues gone every 6 months. 

I will forever network and be aware, connected, and remain relevant.

It's what I have coached every single person I've helped with career and life choices on. 

But I won't worry endlessly.

There rarely is loyalty anymore, and trust erodes quickly when a company fails to deliver on their numbers.

But I won't obsess over it. 

Because if there's one thing my anxiety has taught me, is that worst case scenario rarely comes true, worrying without action  and plans gets you nothing but burnt out, and action and a solid plan over chance wins any single day. 

So yes, I worry. Yes, I trust my gut. Yes, I don't believe there's loyalty or safety in the corporate world. 

But I wake up every day and do my best. I wake up and work hard because I believe in the company, the mission, and my leadership AND more importantly, I believe in my own personal pride and ownership.

I network often. I stay top of mind. I am building a consulting and coaching business to help because it's a lifelong PASSION to help people.

I keep my resume updated. I update my LinkedIn profile. I take calls from friends who are hiring, so I can help people who have been laid off AND so I can stay top of mind.

I take classes and learn new things -- because I love to learn and know how important staying relevant is. 

There is worry without plans

and there is vigilance with action.

I choose the latter.   and I encourage anyone, whether you work with me or not, to come up with a plan to do the same. 

Be a good human.

I’m unnecessarily excited to try the Feast & Fettle meals tomorrow that I ordered.

Lots of options so my kids won’t complain (well about that anyway) complete with sides and a variety of ways to make a meal for the week. 

And the fact that as a working mom I don’t need to think much about what my kiddos will eat this week while keeping it healthy…

Time is money and I have a feeling this will be worth every penny (even if as teenagers they may need 5 portions each and are hungry an hour later) 

I may even go crazy and delve into lunch options next time I order and try those. 

No worry about lunch or dinner a few times a week? 

Even as someone who loves to cook, this is a working mom’s dream.
