I used to coach executives to project confidence.

Most people burn every bridge on the way out of a job.

Her friends kept asking, "How do you always land on your feet?"

This is how.

The person you have friction with today still respects your work. They just don't like the friction. Remove yourself gracefully, and the respect remains.

I felt it at the peak of building Art of Charm. Surrounded by people all day. Events every week. Thousands of connections.

The few people I could actually be honest with? I could count them on one hand.

Turns out I'd been collecting contacts when I should have been deepening conversations.

The shift was simple. Fewer people, more truth.

One real conversation where you say what you actually think is worth more than fifty coffee meetings where you perform.

Everyone talks about emotional intelligence.

Almost nobody can actually do it in the moment.

That's because EQ has become a buzzword, not a behavior.

The real skill isn't understanding emotions. It's calibrating to them in real time.

I've watched hundreds of leaders who scored high on every EQ assessment completely miss the room.

A director ran a team offsite last month. She'd prepared empathetic talking points. Active listening prompts. The whole toolkit.

Her team was exhausted from a brutal Q4. They needed space to decompress, not another framework.

She read the material. She missed the people.

There's a difference between knowing what emotions are and sensing what's actually happening in a room right now.

I call it emotional calibration.

It's the ability to walk into any conversation and adjust your energy, pace, and approach based on what the room needs. Not what you planned to deliver.

Teams led by emotionally calibrated leaders perform 20% better. Not because the leaders are smarter.

Because they respond to what's real instead of what's scripted.

Here's the test.

Can you tell the difference between polite agreement and genuine buy-in?

Can you sense when someone's "I'm fine" means they're not?

Can you adjust your approach mid-sentence when the energy shifts?

That's not emotional intelligence.

That's emotional calibration.

One is a concept. The other is a skill. Learn the difference.

Nobody taught them how to read a room.

She was right.

We built an education system that tests for IQ and assumes everything else is intuitive.

It isn't.

72% of Gen Z workers want more face-to-face interaction. They know something's missing. They just never learned the mechanics.

How to enter a conversation already in progress. How to exit one gracefully. How to hold eye contact without it feeling like a staring contest.

These are learnable skills. But someone has to teach them.

The companies figuring this out are investing in people skills training alongside technical onboarding.

The ones that aren't? They're watching $450 billion in soft skills gaps drain their bottom line annually.

The smartest investment you can make in young talent isn't another software license.

It's teaching them how to connect with the person sitting across from them.

Start treating social skills like any other business competency. Trainable. Measurable. Essential.

"Stop trying to be known by everyone. Start being unforgettable to someone."

My mentor dropped this truth bomb after watching me work a conference like a business card collecting machine.

I was 27, running Art of Charm, convinced influence meant knowing everyone.

50 business cards in my pocket. Zero meaningful connections in my network.

The next day, I tested a different approach.

Instead of speed-dating the entire room, I had three real conversations.

Just three.

Here's what "going deep" actually looked like:

• Asked about their biggest challenge - then shut up and listened for 5 full minutes

• Listened for what they weren't saying - the pause before answering, the energy shift

• Offered specific help without being asked - connected one to a potential CTO client and another to a key investor

Six months later:

One conversation = our first corporate client and first six figure contract
47 business cards = zero responses

The math was brutal but clear.

Most leaders are playing a numbers game they can't win. 

They're at every event, on every call, in every meeting.

Exhausted. 

Spread thin. 

Forgettable.

Meanwhile, the truly influential? 

They're having three conversations that matter more than your 300 LinkedIn requests.

They know this truth:

Real influence compounds through depth, not width.

It's not about being everywhere. It's about being unforgettable somewhere.

Your influence isn't measured by your LinkedIn connections.

It's measured by how many people would drop everything to take your call.

Build that list. Nothing else scales.

You think of the perfect thing to say 10 minutes after the conversation ends.

In the moment? Nothing.

I used to have this problem constantly. Early in my career, I'd leave meetings replaying what I should have said. Sharp insights. Perfect comebacks. All arriving too late.

I thought I was slow.

I wasn't slow. I was monitoring.

Half my brain was running performance reviews while the other half tried to have a conversation. No wonder nothing came out right.

The fix wasn't "think faster."

It was stop thinking about myself entirely.

When I shifted all my attention to the other person, something strange happened. The right words showed up on their own. Not rehearsed. Not clever. Just honest responses to what was actually happening.

The smartest thing I ever said in a room came when I stopped trying to be smart.

Everyone's upskilling for the AI era.

Most of them are learning the wrong thing.

They're stacking certifications, learning prompts, studying tools.

Meanwhile, the skill that actually determines who gets promoted is the one they've never trained.

A senior engineer came to me after getting passed over for a leadership role.

Third time. His technical reviews were flawless.

His skip-level feedback?

"Hard to read. Doesn't connect with the team."

He could build systems that processed 2 million requests per second.

He couldn't make a direct report feel heard in a 15-minute one-on-one.

69% of hiring managers now say they'd choose someone with strong people skills over stronger technical skills.

Not because soft skills are "nice to have."

Because every technical skill gets cheaper to access every year.

The ability to walk into a room and build trust in 30 seconds gets more expensive.

That's the math nobody's doing.

While you study the latest framework, someone with half your technical ability is getting the promotion.

Because they learned how to make people feel something.

Your company can hire ten engineers who code better than you.

They can't hire someone who makes the team want to show up on Monday.

Stop investing in skills that depreciate. Start investing in the one that compounds.

The person who gets your next promotion won't be the smartest candidate.

They'll be the one the room trusts fastest.

Your resume is getting filtered before a human ever reads it.

And it has nothing to do with your qualifications.

I review resumes with clients all the time. The same mistake shows up every single time.

They lead with skills. Certifications. Tools. Methodologies.

Not one line about what those skills actually produced.

Here's how I explain it.

The job posting is the lock. Your resume is the key.

Every bullet in that posting exists because the company has a problem. If your resume doesn't show you've solved that kind of problem, your skills are invisible.

Thousands of resumes talk about what people can do.

Almost none talk about what happened because they did it.

"I'm certified in project management."

vs.

"I led a cross-functional launch that shipped two weeks early."

Same person. Same skill. One gets interviews. The other gets filtered.

Hiring managers think in outcomes. Start showing yours.

Do your resume bullets pass that test?

You've mastered Zoom. Your Slack messages get instant replies.

And your in-person presence is quietly atrophying.

1 in 4 remote workers now report declining social skills. 

Not hypothetically. 

Measurably.

A VP of marketing told me she used to own every room she walked into. 

Conferences. Client dinners. Board meetings.

After three years of remote work, she showed up at an industry event and froze.

"I forgot how to work a room. I literally forgot."

She wasn't exaggerating.

Her reading-the-room instincts had gone dormant. 

The micro-expressions she used to catch. 

The energy shifts. 

The moment when someone's polite smile stops being genuine.

Those signals don't transmit through a screen.

And skills you don't practice, you lose.

Here's what's happening that nobody talks about.

We optimized for digital efficiency. 

Async communication. 

Camera-off meetings.

And we accidentally trained ourselves to interact with interfaces instead of humans.

The fix isn't complicated. But it requires intention.

Show up to one in-person interaction this week where you can't hide behind a screen.

Notice what you've lost. That's the first step to rebuilding it.

The person who got your last promotion wasn't smarter than you.

They just showed up differently.

People who get passed over say: "Let my work speak for itself."

People who get promoted say: "Let me walk you through what my work means for us."

Same results. Different framing.

An engineer I worked with spent nine years doing excellent work nobody noticed. Talented. Reliable. Underpaid.

His own words: "I felt like no one would ever want to hire me. Like I was just this low-value person."

He changed one thing. Stopped hiding his contributions.

He built a testing tool and made sure people knew about it.

At the next all-hands, his name got called out in front of a hundred people.

"I'm not the most skilled engineer here. But everyone loves me. Glowing reviews. Raises."

Now he's on track for a senior promotion.

Same person. Same talent. Different visibility.

Your boss can't promote what they can't see.

Which side of this pattern do you fall on?

Your boss loves you. Your reviews are glowing. Promotions feel inevitable.

Until they leave.

I've watched this happen with clients more times than I can count.

They built one incredible relationship with their leader. Invested everything in making that person happy. Got great reviews. Felt safe.

Then that leader took a new role or left the company entirely.

And suddenly they're starting from zero.

The new leader doesn't know them. Doesn't owe them anything. Might even bring in their own people.

All those years of relationship building? Gone with one person's departure.

This is the coattails trap.

If your entire career depends on one person's opinion of you, you have a single point of failure.

Here's the fix.

Cultivate relationships across the organization. Sideways. With peers in other departments who have no say in your review but know your work.

When the coattails disappear, your network catches you.

In 2023, I hit a wall. 
My LinkedIn content was getting loads of views, I had plenty of followers, people were liking and commenting and even sending DMs that I was "inspiring" or sharing "great insights." But none of it mattered. 

My business had plateaued and I wasn't signing new clients.

I'd wake up every day thinking about what to post, spend hours commenting on other people's content, and do all the things the LinkedIn gurus said you sure do.
But trying to win the popularity contest wasn't magically bringing in clients. And it had me worried. If things didn't change, I might have to go back to working for someone else.

Then something hit me.

When I first launched Growth Habit, I signed 12 coaching clients in the first two weeks. Twelve. I didn't have a big following, I wasn't posting every day, and I definitely didn't have some fancy content strategy.

So what the hell had changed since then?

I'd lost sight of what actually worked. I'd gotten so caught up in creating more content and chasing engagement that I'd forgotten the thing that made me successful in the first place. I wasn't creating demand anymore, I was just creating noise.

So I stopped.

I stopped trying to chase the algorithm and stopped doing what people with hundreds of thousands of followers said I "should" be doing. I went back to what actually worked: understanding what needs to happen in someone's brain for them to go from "that's helpful" to "I need to work with this person."

Here's the part that blows my mind:

In the last two years my revenue has more than doubled while my LinkedIn views have dropped dramatically. I spend less time on here but am having more impact. Because I’ve focused on creating demand instead of chasing engagement.
