A private equity partner came to me after closing a $200M deal.

The pattern is simple.

Consistency over time creates the safety needed for real relationships. You can't force depth. You build it through repeated exposure in low-pressure environments.

After coaching thousands of executives on social capital, I can tell you this:

The professionals who break through isolation don't add more events to their calendar. They commit to fewer places with higher frequency.

Your third place matters more than your office or your home. Find it. Protect it. Show up.

The influence you're chasing doesn't come from accumulating contacts. It comes from people seeing you as familiar, trustworthy, and consistent over time.

That PE partner? 

He joined a BJJ class. 

Made zero professional connections. 

Gained three real friendships. 

Said it saved his mental health.

Your network isn't built in a weekend.

She walked into the board presentation with perfect posture.

Designer suit. Every answer rehearsed.

Bombed it completely.

The senior director came to me confused.

"I did everything right. I looked confident. I sounded confident. What happened?"

I asked her what the board members cared about most.

She couldn't tell me.

Executive presence isn't about how you show up.

It's about how you make others feel when you're there.

I've coached hundreds of executives over 18 years. The ones with real presence aren't the most polished.

They're the most present with other people.

That director was so focused on appearing confident, she forgot to make anyone feel heard.

We shifted everything.

Instead of rehearsing her answers, she researched each board member. What they cared about. What questions they'd likely ask. What mattered to them specifically.

She was surprised by how much that changed her preparation.

Next presentation, she didn't perform confidence. She demonstrated understanding.

The board stayed 20 minutes past the scheduled end time. They asked follow-up questions. They leaned in.

They invited her to strategy sessions she'd been trying to get into for 2 years.

When you walk into a room worried about your presence, people feel your anxiety.

When you walk in genuinely curious about their perspective, they feel seen.

That's executive presence. Not polish. Connection.

How do you show up in high-stakes moments?

The most important skill to develop in 2026 isn't AI fluency or data analysis.

It's validation.

And I don't mean fake compliments or empty praise.

Here's what I mean.

Your colleague shares a frustration about a project timeline. Most people immediately jump to solutions or worse, minimize the concern.

"That's not that bad."

"You should see what I'm dealing with."

"Have you tried just working harder?"

None of that is validation.

Validation means acknowledging another person's experience as real and legitimate. Not agreeing with it. Not solving it. Just recognizing it exists.

Watch what happens when you master this.

Someone shares a challenge. You respond: "That sounds genuinely difficult. Walk me through what happened."

That's it.

No advice. No comparison. No minimizing.

You just acknowledged their reality.

What's really important is this creates psychological safety. People feel seen. And when people feel seen, they trust you.

Trust opens doors that credentials never will.

I tested this with a client who kept getting passed over for leadership roles despite exceptional technical skills. His feedback was always the same: "Not ready for executive presence."

We focused entirely on validation in meetings.

Instead of immediately proposing solutions, he learned to say: "Help me understand the constraint you're working with."

Instead of defending his ideas when challenged, he'd respond: "That's a fair concern. What would make you more comfortable?"

Three months later, he got the promotion.

Nothing changed about his technical abilities. Everything changed about how people experienced talking to him.

Here's what validation does that most people miss.

It reveals information others won't share. 

When people feel validated, they tell you what they're actually thinking. Not what they think you want to hear.

It builds influence without authority. 

You don't need a title to make people want to work with you.

It creates opportunities. 

The most valuable connections come from people who feel genuinely understood by you.

Let's be honest. 

Most executives are terrible at this because they were rewarded their entire career for having the right answer fast.

But leadership isn't about having answers. 

It's about making people feel safe enough to share the real problem.

Stop trying to prove you're the smartest person in the room.

Start trying to make others feel heard.

Your opportunities will multiply.

People aren’t ignoring you because they’re busy.

They’re ignoring you because you lack influence.

If you're putting in effort — reaching out, inviting people, following up — and getting little back… It's not bad luck.

It's a low Influence Index problem.

I had a client last month. Senior software architect. Smart guy. He'd invite colleagues for drinks after work.

Radio silence.

He'd suggest team lunches.

"Maybe next time."

He'd organize weekend events.

Two people showed up. Out of 15 invited.

His first thought? 

"People are just busy."

Wrong diagnosis.

Here's what was really happening:

People didn't see value in connecting with him. 

Not because he wasn't valuable — he was brilliant. But because he hadn't built influence.

Couldn't get a single person to take his call.

Networking advice tells you to meet more people. Collect more cards. Grow your connections.

Stop planning your next point. 

Focus entirely on them.

What made their eyes light up just now? 

What topic did they gloss over that might be more interesting if you asked about it?

Next event, he was surprised by the difference.

Conversations lasted 20 minutes instead of 5. 

People asked for his contact. 

They actually followed up.

Forced conversation happens when you're performing.

Natural conversation happens when you're participating.

The difference is where you put your attention.

What helps you stay present?

After years of leading change, I’ve learned this the hard way.

Data doesn’t drive buy-in. Stories do.

During a coaching session last week, she confessed to me the 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 reason her digital initiative suddenly took off after months of resistance:

Use their exact words back to them. They say "frustrated with the process," you reference "the process" later. This isn't manipulation. You're speaking their language instead of making them translate yours.

Ask the second question. Everyone asks "How was your weekend?" Almost nobody asks "What made it great?" The first question is politeness. The second shows you're actually listening.

Remember small details they share. Their daughter's soccer tournament. The project they're stressed about. People remember who remembers them.

Those students reported back within days that conversations felt completely different.

People opened up faster. Meetings went smoother. They got responses to follow-ups they'd been chasing for weeks.

One student was surprised by how quickly it worked. "I thought rapport took time to build."

It does if you're trying to be charming. It doesn't if you're paying attention to someone else's world instead of performing in your own.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says

It’s crazy to me that you can be a Christian your whole life but not understand this verse.

And this was the case for me until recently.

I was baptized when I was little, but at the time had no idea what it really meant to submit your life to Jesus.

Today Ruby and I both publicly professed our faith to Jesus by getting baptized at our church. 

And this time was a lot different for me.

It’s been an amazing past few years and I’m beyond grateful for the people around me who’ve helped me realize that Jesus isn’t just the answer on Sundays…He’s the answer 24/7, 365. 

Whether you’re going through a rough patch in life or if right now it feels like sunshine and rainbows every day, don’t forget that freedom is available to all of us at all times.

None of this matters without purpose.

You can build a massive business.
Make millions of dollars.
Travel the world and have all the experiences you could dream of.

But what happens when its over?
If there’s no purpose behind what you’re building, then you’re on a fast track to dissatisfaction.

What impact do you want to make on this world?
What legacy do you want to leave behind?

I believe that God gives each and every one of us a purpose but only if we’re willing to receive it.

At the end of the day, you can’t take your “empire” with you when you die.

Agree?

Tech was down in church today.

No mics for worship. The production and worship teams did their best to make it work anyway.

By the end of service there was still a GROUP of people that committed their lives to Jesus for the first time.

God is good.

It’s pretty wild what happens in your brain when you consistently do things you don’t want to do.

Last year I listened to a lot of Huberman Lab, Andrew Huberman’s podcast where he talks a lot about the human brain and how it works.

Something he talks about that I find incredibly interesting is the anterior mid-cingulate cortex…a small part of your brain that’s directly related to effort, resistance to discomfort, and the willingness to act when something is hard or unpleasant.

The anterior mid-cingulate cortex (or aMCC) literally only grows when you do things that you DON’T WANT TO DO.

So even if you’re consistently doing “hard” things that you enjoy, it doesn’t grow.

A great example he uses is the cold plunge. For a lot of people, jumping into a cold plunge at ANY time is something that they don’t want to do. But for certain people like myself, plunging in ~40 degree water directly after cardio or the sauna is extremely refreshing and does not give me much mental resistance…therefore its not something that would cause my aMCC to grow…

However, if I cold plunge first thing in the morning when I’m still half asleep (which I consider as something I do NOT look forward to) that’s something that DOES grow that part of my brain. And if I do it enough times, it will only get easier.

This goes along with something Alex Hormozi talks about all the time…Do more hard things and hard things will become easy.

This mindset can be applied to any part of your life where there’s resistance.

If you have more hard conversations, hard conversations will be easier to have.

If you hate the gym but go enough times in a row, the resistance to get in the car and go will shrink.

If you don’t like speaking in front of audiences, making cold calls, or knocking on doors, then doing these things will make everything else easier.

Every time that tiny part of your brain grows even by the smallest amount, anything that you think will be hard will seem just a little bit easier.

Pretty cool right?

If you're making over 750k/yr, what do you think is the biggest "leak" in your financial life?

If I had to guess, the answer is taxes.

It's not uncommon for people at that level to give up on the search for ways to make this bleed less painful.

At the end of the day, you make enough money that you can easily afford the checks you send out every year…even if it makes you a little bit nauseous.

But here's what I wonder...

At what point did you stop looking for better ways?

Was it after the third advisor or CPA that told you this is the best you can do?

Was it when you realized you were spending more time trying to save money than making it?

Or was it when you just accepted that "it is what it is"?

Any of these make a lot of sense.

When you're crushing it in business, the last thing you want to do is spend your mental energy on something that feels unsolvable.

𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝑨𝑳𝑾𝑨𝒀𝑺 𝒃𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒕.

Growing revenue. Scaling the business. Finding the next deal.

But every time you cut that check, the same feeling comes back.

That same thought crosses your mind.

"There has to be a better way."

But soon enough your focus is back to building.

The cycle continues.

Makes you wonder though...

At what income level did you stop believing there were better options?

And what would have to change for you to start looking again?

Your results will never change if YOU don't change.

The scent of new year motivation is in the air and it has me thinking…

A lot of people want different outcomes but don't change anything about themselves to get there.

They want better results but do the same thing over and over again.

And you know what's wild?

The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn't always about working harder.

Sometimes it's about being willing to change WHO you are to get there.

I look back at 2023 and I was a completely different person than I am today.

Different priorities...different focus...totally different version of myself.

It’s a real slap in the face when you realize that you’re the reason you’re not progressing. 

Excuses only get you so far and I ran out of them a couple of years ago.

And because of that I’m finally seeing different results.

Sometimes you need to become a different version of yourself in order to get where you want to go.

What are you willing to change about yourself this year to get the results you actually want?

Remember making your first 100k?

It was probably a great feeling until you remembered the chunk that has to go straight to Uncle Sam.

What about your first 500k?... First million?

Always bittersweet when you level up your income...because you're also leveling up your tax bracket😅

Now you're bringing in the most you ever have.

But so is the IRS.

When you have a great year, they have a great year too.

I know…it stings.

Not because you don't want to pay your fair share.

But because you know exactly what else you COULD be doing with that money.

Think about what you paid in taxes last year.

Now imagine you have some of it back.

What would you do with it?

Most people just accept their tax bill for what it is.

"Everyone has to pay taxes."

Sure, everyone pays taxes.

But not everyone pays the same amount.

When you're making 500k+ every year, your tax bill could and likely is in the 6 figures.

That’s more than most people’s annual income.

Do you just write the checks every year and move on?

Is your “tax guy” strategizing at a high level so you pay the minimum you legally could?

If it’s just one guy, I can tell you he’s probably NOT.

There are tons of ways you can potentially minimize your tax bill LEGALLY, but one thing about all of them is that it requires a TEAM…not just one guy, but at the very least a few different professionals in a few different industries.

What would you do with an extra $100k, $200k, or $500k every year?
