Provided technical writing support to the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery department as they worked to implement the recommendations of a comprehensive review by Deloitte.

Key Accomplishments:
• Created a content style guide to ensure documentation had a consistent look and feel.
• Used the content style guide to create templates for several different governance documents.
• Worked with subject matter experts to create a master glossary of Disaster Recovery terms.
• Created business requirements that were used in selecting a centralized document management solution. 
• Created a multi-level folder structure to house all the Disaster Recovery documents in SharePoint.
• Assisted the program manager with elements of the project plan.
• Worked with product managers and their teams to populate 5 playbooks with important disaster recovery content to align with Deloitte recommendations. 
• Reviewed and updated the IT Disaster Recovery Manual to align with recommendations from Deloitte.

FortisAlberta

Provided remote technical writing support and training design to the Procurement department.

Key Accomplishments:
• Created a 2-day training course to onboard FortisAlberta business units for the Procure to Pay program.
• Created a training course for Buyers.
• Created a training course to onboard FortisAlberta vendors for the Procure to Pay program.
• Designed and led the creation and deployment of the Procure to Pay Vendor Support Site. 
• Worked with subject matter experts to write several procedures for the Procurement department.

Senior Technical Writer, IT

Parkland Fuel Corporation

In this role, I provided the IT department with technical writing and communication support. I authored corporate communication pieces for IT initiatives and reviewed communication copy for grammar and punctuation. I wrote and edited knowledge base articles (ServiceNow) and monitored and maintained adherence with the content style guide. 

Key Accomplishments:
• Worked with the Cyber Security team on a project to write processes and procedures to get all the Parkland-owned service stations in eastern Canada PCI-DSS accredited.
• Worked with the Cyber Security team on a project to write procedures for the Process Control Network at the Parkland Refinery in Richmond B.C.
• Served as Chair of the Knowledge Base Governance Committee.
• Served as ServiceNow Knowledge Base Administrator and transformed previously neglected knowledge bases into vital customer-support tools.  
• Worked with the ServiceNow Admin. to optimize the publishing of knowledgebase articles.
• Retired outdated knowledge base articles, resolved process gaps, and liaised with vendors to install CSS. Formally recognized by supervisors for the transformation.
• Wrote 70 knowledge base articles for ServiceNow. 
• Provided technical writing support on 20 IT projects. 
• Wrote 50 corporate communications pieces.
• Proofread 60 IT notifications.  
• Liaised with stakeholders and subject matter experts on multiple projects to define key messaging and instructions for end users, eliminating unnecessary jargon. 
• Coached PMs on estimating documentation projects.
• Established and implemented a content style guide and 29 IT document templates to introduce documentation consistency.
• Sat on the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

I collaborated with a team of technical writers, instructional designers, and subject matter experts to deliver training programs for construction professionals. Additionally, I consulted with enterprise-wide stakeholders to define training requirements and expectations. I delivered multiple user manuals for different departments and created training materials to support IT implementations. I also developed a style guide, templates, and master glossary.

Key Accomplishments:
• Crafted 25 training courses for Construction and Preconstruction Phases of Builders’ Framework training program – courses achieved PMI and Gold Seal Certification. 
• These courses also received the Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA) Workforce Development Leadership Award.
• Created a Gold Seal Certified course to accelerate career development of field talent and prepare candidates for Superintendent positions.
• Developed Work Winning procedure manual that offered standard operating processes and procedures, ultimately enabling the Infrastructure Division to centralize work winning activity.
• Introduced a checklist for the Major Project Division that documented pursuit key decisions.

In this role, I provided short-term, technical writing support to the quality department. This consisted of rebuilding Microsoft Word templates for them.

In this role, I provided short-term, technical-writing support. This consisted of reviewing the various documents the client created in Microsoft Word and fixing any formatting errors that I found.

In this role, I provided short-term, technical writing assistance on a project. This consisted of reviewing and formatting a geological document.

My technical beginning…

In 2012, I, along with 400 other people, received the news that we were laid off. I vowed this wouldn't happen again. On that December day, I decided to go into business for myself as a technical writer. I knew I could add value to companies by helping turn chaos into order for them by creating effective documentation. 

Starting as a numbered company, I obtained contracts across industries from software, utilities, oil and gas, to construction, growing my documentation process along the way. Clients realized that it wasn’t my ability to develop reliable technical documentation that they valued the most. It was the removal of chaos in their organization, replacing it with the order needed for improved business continuity, impactful operational efficiencies, and mitigation of risks. Companies needed the stability that quality documentation brought across teams and organizational departments. As a result, this stability became the crucial piece for operational effectiveness, particularly in the face of a compliance audit. 

In 2014, I rebranded as Cohort Technical Communications – protector and friend to organizations – to further unlock the value in clients’ existing documentation. Using my Content Pillars Methodology™, clients receive insights that, when embraced, can leave an IT department in a much better place. Specifically, the insights identified point to the technical infrastructure and deliverables required for a more orderly and efficient work environment. This allows teams to focus on their core competencies that result in generating that all-important business revenue.

It’s more than my two decades of experience that have helped me leave a trail of happy clients in my wake. Specific certifications that help me create superior user experiences include Microsoft Office Word Expert 2016 and the ITILⓇ Foundations Certification for IT Service Management. 

I was a longtime member of STC Alberta (Society for Technical Communication), previously serving as president from 2015-2016 and a supporter of the Calgary Humane Society.
