Served as the public relations manager for Cision, PRWeb, Help A Reporter Out (HARO), Visible Technologies and iContact. I worked as the community manager for Cision and PRWeb and formerly Vocus and iContact, providing followers with branded content and customer service, in addition to transferring leads to the sales department. I also managed native advertising campaigns and budgets of over $100,000 for Cision and PRWeb’s LinkedIn and Twitter accounts and ran our influencer relations campaigns. 

o	Secured 66% less cost per lead via Twitter ads than the average of other marketing tactics for this campaign.
o	Planned and executed Cision’s Future of PR photo contest, securing a partnership with Canva and influencers with over one million followers, leading to over 60 entries.

At Vocus, I served as the sole manager of a vibrant online community of well over 300,000 public relations professionals across Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Plus for both Vocus and its subsidiary brand, PRWeb. 

Some of my responsibilities included conducting weekly social media performance reports, media monitoring, writing press releases, contributing to The Vocus Blog, conducting regular analytic reports, securing speaker engagements and awards for Vocus thought leaders. Using public relations fundamentals, I manage Vocus' native advertising campaigns, garnering above average engagement for a business-to-business brand.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧:

→ 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗲. Platforms keep their users. Nothing changes.

→ 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Children migrate to less regulated platforms. When something goes wrong, they won't ask for help.

→ 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. A ban shifts responsibility to parents and children. The companies causing the harm face no consequences.

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞?

Stop asking parents to police billion-pound platforms. Make the platforms build safer products.

The Online Safety Act already exists. It needs teeth:

→ Mandatory safety features for youth accounts—not buried in settings, on by default
→ Ban specific harmful features: infinite scroll, autoplay, recommendation algorithms for under-18s
→ Real fines that hurt. Not millions—billions. A percentage of global revenue
→ Personal liability for executives who ignore safety requirements

We regulated car manufacturers when seatbelts saved lives. We didn't ban teenagers from cars.

Our children don't need prohibition. They need protection.

And protection means holding the companies accountable, not the kids.

Ten years ago, Marco and I bet everything on an idea most people thought was naive.

Advertising that doesn't feel like advertising.

OpenAI just announced they're introducing advertising.

Let that sink in for a moment.

A company founded as a non-profit with a mission to ensure AI benefits humanity is now embracing a revenue model built on attention capture and behavioural influence.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭:

→ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁" 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺. Bold promise. Difficult to verify. Advertising revenue is inherently tied to engagement metrics. Investors and advertisers will want growth in ad impressions. The economic incentives pull in one direction.

→ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀. Conversations are "private from advertisers" and data isn't "sold." Carefully worded. It doesn't preclude using conversation data internally to build targeting models. The distinction between selling data and using data to serve targeted ads is one Meta and Google have exploited for years.

→ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲" 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲. They say ads won't influence ChatGPT's responses. But if an advertiser pays to appear alongside certain topics, there's implicit editorial pressure. The firewall between editorial and commercial is notoriously difficult to maintain.

→ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. Pay £20/month for Pro (ad-free), or accept advertising. A premium experience for those who can afford it, a surveilled experience for everyone else—framed as "expanding access."

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞?

OpenAI is presenting advertising as democratising AI access. But the advertising business model has historically eroded user trust and privacy across the tech industry.

They won't show ads near "health, mental health or politics." But what about finance? Relationships? Career advice? Legal questions? These are areas where advertising influence could be genuinely harmful.

The mission drift is real. From non-profit origins to capped-profit structure to... this. Whether OpenAI can genuinely be different remains to be seen.

Many of us will be sceptical. And given the broader industry track record, that scepticism is earned.

My daughter is looking for GCSE work experience right now.

I'm helping her scroll through options while simultaneously teaching AI to university students and running an agency I founded a decade ago.

It's given me three distinct perspectives on one uncomfortable truth.

LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 just dropped, and the data tells a story we need to hear.

𝐀𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫:

"Founder" is now the 8th fastest-growing job in the UK. Not because entrepreneurship got easier—but because traditional employment got harder to trust.

When uncertainty rises, people bet on themselves. I did it ten years ago with Vertis Media. More are doing it now.

𝐀𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫:

AI Engineer sits at #1. Machine Learning Researcher at #10.

But here's the number that keeps me up at night: 𝟮𝟬% 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲.

We're building the future of work with 80% of the same perspective. That's not a pipeline problem—it's a failure of imagination about who belongs in these rooms.

An 11-second homemade jingle just became Dr Pepper's biggest marketing moment of the year.

TikTok creator Romeo posted a simple song—"Dr Pepper, baby, it's good and nice"—and the internet did what no agency could orchestrate. 

Remixes flooded in. 
Brands piled into the comments. 
Indeed said "You're hired." 
Wingstop pleaded "Me next." 
Qdoba made it their ringtone.

And Dr Pepper? They're still figuring out how to respond.

What we can learn from this:

→ 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. They're co-creators. Your fans will make content FOR you—if you let them.

→ 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. Social media expert Dayna Castillo 🦀 Silence, Brand! newsletter nailed it: "It's almost like crisis comms, but for fun." Brands need playbooks for positive moments, not just damage control.

→ 𝗛𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁. While Dr Pepper deliberated, Romeo started writing jingles for Hyundai and Vita Coco. The moment moved on.

𝐌𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞?

The old marketing model assumed brands control the narrative. 
The new reality? 
Your audience is already participating in your marketing. The only question is whether you'll show up to the party they're throwing.

As Castillo put it: "When something this positive happens, the real risk isn't doing it wrong. It's letting the moment pass."

I'm adding this to my syllabus. It's the perfect example of participatory culture in action—and a warning about what happens when brands aren't ready to dance.

Textbooks can't teach you what happens when a founder walks into a lecture hall.

Last week I invited Andrea Tortella 🇲🇨 to speak to my Digital Advertising students ICMP - The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. 
Word spread. Yannis Iliopoulos and Music Marketing Master cohort joined. The room was packed.

Andrea didn't deliver a polished corporate talk. He shared the messy reality, Silicon Valley stories, the non-linear path of building a startup.

His company, Thrad,  is building in-chat ads for LLM apps. Click-through rates up to 5%—compared to 1% for Google and under 0.5% for social platforms. 

This is what the future of AdTech looks like.

University curriculums will always lag behind the industry. The marketing landscape changes every few months. Textbooks are outdated before they're printed.

But when you bring founders into the classroom, people building the technology that's reshaping our industry, students get something no syllabus can offer:

A front-row seat to where advertising is actually heading.

We got into the weeds of what it actually looks like to build and scale an AdTech startup in a landscape that changes every few months. It was a refreshing reality check to see how these students are already thinking about the intersection of creative strategy and technical execution.

You usually expect these sessions to be one sided you give a talk, answer a few questions, and head back to work. We ended up having a raw conversation about the "why" behind marketing technology and the messy, non linear journey of entrepreneurship. 

Skipping the traditional recruiter filters and seeing how someone thinks in a live environment is the ultimate talent hack.

I’m happy to say the session didn't just end with a presentation but ended with hiring! We’re still hiring at Thrad so reach out to be at the frontier of AI & Advertising joining a team of PhDs in AI and industry leaders. 

It’s a reminder to anyone in the industry that if you want to find the best talent, you have to go where the ideas are being tested.
