Networking events were slowly KILLING me.
And I KEPT showing up...😔 

When I moved to Silicon Valley, 
it felt like being lost in thick fog.

Lonely. Not belonged.

Found Meetup.
SF networking events. 
Hope...

Attending events became my ritual.
Name tag: ✓
Forced smile: ✓
Empty pockets, ready to collect.

Room buzzing with possibility.
Conversations flowing around me.
Me? Frozen by the door.

Didn't know how to approach anyone.
"Hi... I'm Aytakin. I'm... new here."
The words felt heavy...

Everyone else seemed so effortless.
So connected.
So American.

Why was this so easy for everyone else?
What was wrong with me?

You don't have to hide your identity.
But decide: 
- Where will I adapt?
- Where will I stand firm?

I speak with an accent.
I used to hide it.
Now I own it.

Why?
Because it's part of my AUTHORITY.

When I prep a client for a pitch or presentation,
I teach them how to structure their narrative.
The way it is expected in Silicon Valley.
That's not selling out. That's strategic.

The Real Advice:

After 40 you’re “too late” in many ways.


Especially, if you are an immigrant! 

Late to start again
Late to the system.
Late to the network.

When I moved to Silicon Valley after my 30s,
I felt behind…

- Behind people who grew up here.
- Behind people who knew the rules.

There is no deadline for leadership.

Society’s obsession with early success...

This woman from Belgium didn’t have a designer title.
At 26, she invented the wrap dress, 
making more than 25,000 dresses a week.

Creator of the wrap style. 
Diane von Fürstenberg -> DVF.


Her mother survived the concentration camps.
And when Diane was scared, 
her mother taught her one rule:

“Fear is not an option.” 

She arrived as an outsider,
learning the codes of new rooms.

DVF’s life took a turn that most people don’t expect.
Her marriage began to break. 
And instead of shrinking, she built.

In 1974, she introduced a wrap dress for $80. 
Within the first year, she was producing 25,000 a week. 

By 1976, she had sold one million.
Landed the cover of Newsweek. 
But it didn’t stay a fairytale.

By the early 1990s, her label had sunk.
Then she pulled off a major comeback, 
relaunching in 1997. 

And the most “DVF” part of all?
She’s been blunt about what she really sells:

“I really sell confidence.” 

That’s luxury to me.
Not a logo. A transformation.

3 lessons from DVF (for women building in a new country):
 → Don’t just build a product. Build a feeling.
 → Your comeback can become your brand.
 → Elegance is a standard—kept consistently.
