I learned that the hard way. 

I spent 4 years at a company working 70-hour weeks. 
Always “on.” 
Always fixing something. 
Always chasing my tail. 

I thought I was making progress. 

But when the reorg came? 
I didn’t get a promotion. 
I didn’t get a seat at the table. 
I got a redundancy. 

And that hit me. 

It wasn’t about how hard I worked. 
It was about how strategically I moved. 

No one knew the hours I put in. 
No one saw the impact. 
Because I didn’t make it visible.

I watched Vidya Balan say something I still haven’t been able to shake.

Early in her career, she was replaced from a film.

If you can’t clearly explain why you’re needed,
the room quietly decides without you.

That’s how senior careers actually move.

Those things make you useful.
They don’t make you necessary.

And being useful feels safe…
until you realise it’s also where careers stall.

At higher levels, decisions are made fast.
Often without you in the room.

The person who moves up is the one whose value is easy to explain:
– why them
– why now
– what breaks without them

If your impact needs a long explanation,
it loses force.

So you keep delivering.
You stay dependable.
