This month marks 30 years in the employee benefits and insurance industry.

My parents came to this country with virtually nothing. I was their first child born in Canada, and in many ways, this career became my dad’s last shot at building something meaningful here.

One of the best pieces of advice he ever gave me was not to join him right away. Instead, he sent me to cut my teeth inside the insurance companies to learn how things really worked from the inside. 

Thirty years later, that advice is still paying dividends.

I only wish he and my mom were still around so I could give them a tour of what we’ve built.

Along the way, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have amazing clients, colleagues, mentors, and friendships that I genuinely value. I’m grateful for every lesson, every challenge, and most of all for the trust people have placed in me and my team.

And maybe the best part?

 Thirty years in, I’m still learning something new every day.

Feeling very grateful today.

That comparison isn’t neutral, it’s expensive, in outcomes, retention, and performance.

When I was younger, I seemed to have an endless circle of friends.

As time went on, life had a way of sorting things out. Some people grew in great directions. Others… not so much. And without any big moment or dramatic decision, my circle simply became smaller.

But it also became better.

That pattern has continued into my career. Today, I’m far more intentional about who I surround myself with, business partners, colleagues, and even clients. I want to work with people who hold themselves to a higher standard, who care about doing things the right way, and who genuinely want to make things better.

That mindset is one of the main reasons I joined the Benefits Alliance. It’s a community where I can compare notes with peers across the country, build real relationships, and contribute to making our industry better as a whole.

Leadership matters in communities like that, and it starts at the top. Carolyne Eagan embodies the kind of thoughtful, values-driven leadership that drew me in from the start, and it’s been a big part of why the BA feels so aligned.

The circle may be smaller these days, but it’s more intentional. And my quality of life, both personally and professionally, is far better because of it.

Women live longer, yet spend more time in poor health. That should change the conversation from “women’s health is a perk” to “women’s health is infrastructure.”
