CJAD 800 Montreal just turned 80.
And I owe them for one of the best “terrible ideas” I ever had.
It was mid-August, and I was 19. Fresh out of Vanier College. Hadn’t even started Concordia University yet.

But I knew two things for sure:
 1. I wanted to be a journalist.
 2. And I wanted to work there.

So I walked into the old Fort Street office, straight up to reception, and said:
“Hi, I’m Abby. I want to intern here. I want to be a journalist.
 I’ll work for free. Nights, weekends. I don’t care.”

She looks at me and asks if I’m here to see the program director.
 I say, “If he’s the one who hires people… then yes.”

The audacity. I cringe and laugh about it now.

Then she points at the Boutique 1861 & La Petite Garçonne bag I’m holding.
 “What’s in there?”
“My birthday dress. I just bought it.”
“When’s your birthday?”
“Today.”
She HOWLS.
 “Hold on.”

She disappears and comes back with the program director.
“This is Abby. It’s her birthday. I really like her spunk.”

He raises an eyebrow. I give him the whole pitch again:
 I’ll do anything, I’ll work for free, just give me a chance.

He hands me a form. “When can you start?”
“Tomorrow.”
That was it.

I stayed for four years. All throughout my uni degree.
And I learned more at CJAD than in my entire degree.


- Dr. Laurie Betito  took me under her wing, made me her producer, and gave me my own live segment.

 - Beryl Wajsman met me on a pundit panel and opened the door to write for The Suburban Newspaper.

- Dan Delmar trusted me to help produce Gang of Four and sit in on the panels.

- Christopher Paré  showed me the board, the secrets to booking exceptional guests, then tossed me my first on-air break when the entertainment reporter couldn’t make it during the drive home show.
 “Abby’s got it. She has a great show on CJLO 1690AM - Concordia University Radio. She can do it.”

- Richard Burnett made late-night panels fun and introduced me to Sharman Yarnell, which led to a gig at Curtains Up TV.

The list really does go on.
These awesome humans let me be weird, loud, curious, opinionated.
They encouraged me to wave my freak flag instead of shrinking to fit some bland “professional” mold.

And the irony?
Years later, I work at Demandii… and one of our core values is literally:
“Wave your freak flag.” Full circle, eh?

And if you’re reading this, here’s the part that’s really about you:
Take a hard look at your circle. 
Your vendors. Your partners. Your clients. Your teams. Colleagues. Friends.

I had the privilege of starting my career in an environment that taught me I don’t have to hide, shrink, or pretend to be less than I am.

When content doesn’t convert right away, most founders think it’s failing.
But only 5% of MQLs are ready to buy now.
The other 95% just aren’t there yet. 

You might know the feeling. You hit “publish”… and all you get is crickets? 

Been there. Still there sometimes. Okay, there oftentimes, if I'm being honest. 

But guess what? Even when it feels like no one is watching, someone is always watching.

Last quarter, a lead came out of nowhere and said:
“Been loving your Demandii stuff for months. Let’s talk.”

Had they ever liked a post?
Nope.
Commented?
Also no. 
But they were watching. Silently.

So if you’re feeling invisible right now, keep going.
The lurkers lurk until the timing is right, and that can be a while...

But when they are ready, you'll be the obvious choice.

Telling your audience “I understand your pain” isn’t the flex you think it is.
Everyone says that.

What matters is what you show next.
Show them the bridge, but how you helped someone just like them solve that exact issue.

Show the tool. The result. The moment it clicked.

That’s where connection turns into conversion.

“I’m scared of annoying people.” "I don't want to come off salesy" "I'll earn a bad rep in my industry." This mindset used to stop me from posting on LinkedIn too.

But then I looked at the data:
– The average person spends 7 minutes a day on LinkedIn
 – My post reach is maybe 5–10% of my audience
 – If someone sees me “a lot,” it’s because they’re engaging

So when someone says, “You’re everywhere,”  WHICH I've stopped taking as a personal attack, here’s what’s actually happening:

1. They’re probably not my buyer.
2. They’re stopping to read when they see my name
3. They’ve interacted with my content, so LinkedIn shows them more
4. They want to post more themselves, but they’re not.
     Instead of owning that gap, it’s easier to label someone else as “too much.”
     Projection is a thing ...


If the people who pay me aren’t complaining, I’m not changing a thing.
Because my actual  IDEAL buyers?

-They’re watching silently.
 -They’re building trust slowly.
 -They need 7–15 touchpoints before they reach out.
- They need proof that I am consistent and know what I'm talking about.


So when that little voice starts telling me I am being too much, I pause and remind myself that I’m not being annoying.
I’m being remembered.

And if that helps one more person find my work when they’re ready, it’s worth it.

PS. Your're never annoying when you're adding value.

A client told me, “Abby, I think we’re posting too much. I’m everywhere. People are getting annoyed.”

Nope. You’re just finally visible  and that makes people (including you) uncomfortable at first.

Here’s what I told him  and what every founder needs to hear when they start shrinking the moment posting consistantly on LinkedIn starts working...

You know who doesn’t comment on LinkedIn posts?
C-suite execs with real problems.
They’re not going to publicly admit, “Yeah, our pipeline is dying.”
or “Our sales process is broken.”

They’re watching quietly. Screenshooting your post.
Slacking it to their team, saying, “Hey, check this company out.” "Look at this."

That’s the behavior that ACTUALLY matters. And here's why ...

A lot of founder-led content looks great on the surface.
But when I look closer, it often sounds like it’s written for:
→ Industry peers
→ Our friends
→ The algorithm

Not an ideal buyer.

And I say this with total empathy, because I see the same thing in my own drafts too ...

The content that hits hardest usually starts with:
“What would someone 3 steps behind me need to hear?”

Less about "me."
More about what my ideal buyer is trying to solve.

As a former journalist, I learned this trick early on. 
Listen more + Talk less.= Earning trust faster.

It's the same with social selling.
I’ve been watching what content actually converts, and here’s what keeps showing up

The viral “vulnerable” posts? They spark conversation but rarely convert.

The structured, insight-driven ones? They’re quieter but lead to DMs, replies, and trust.

The takeaway I keep coming back to is we don’t need to bare our souls on LI.
We need to share our smarts + expertise.

It's just way more valuable to our ideal buyers.


PS. One way I help clients move past this mistake, is we structure their content to feel like a real conversation:
 → First-person voice
 → Specific insight or story
 → A clear takeaway for the reader

Because thoughtful visibility isn’t loud. It’s useful, and useful content earns trust.

A founder hired me to help with her content. She was getting crazy engagement, but no leads. When I reviewed her posts, I saw why: She was being SUPER relatable. But not valuable.

I’m not a math person. Never have been.
Still count on my fingers. No shame. Okay maybe a little… Or a lot :(

But when it comes to marketing? Math matters especially when you’re dealing with MQLs.

Something I’ve learned working with CEOs over the years is this: 
Just because your metrics look "good" doesn’t mean your strategy is working.

Here’s how you know your team might already be falling into the trap AND how to fix it fast.

“Why can’t I just copy–paste my blog as a LinkedIn post?”
Short answer: Tumblr era is dead.
Long answer: LinkedIn and your blog do completely different jobs.

Blog (longform) = deep dive, context, SEO, long attention span
LinkedIn (shortform) = hook fast, make 1 point, spark a reaction

When we paste a blog as a post, we get the worst of both (yay):
 1. Too long for LinkedIn
 2. Too skimmed for anyone to click through

Most teams treat every lead like it’s ready to buy.

It’s not.

We don’t toss out unripe leads; we sort them into the ‘not ready yet’ pile. 

Because only 5% of MQLs are ready now.

The rest? They’ll ripen later… if you know how to nurture them right.

That’s why our system pairs “Now” campaigns (to convert the 5%) with “Later” campaigns (to warm the 95%).

Now + Later = Closed Deals.

Recently, a client told me:
“Abby, I think we’re posting too much. I’m everywhere. People are probably getting annoyed.”

My response. "No. You’re just finally visible. And yeah, it feels weird at first."

But because it's a common issue that pops up anytime a founder begins their personal branding journey, I thought I'd share the insights that helped him stop obsessing over how he's being peceived online ...

First of all, the average person spends 7 minutes a day on LinkedIn.
Your post reach? Maybe 5–10% of your audience.

So if someone says, “I see you everywhere,”? 
Let’s look at what’s really happening:

1.  They’re engaging with your stuff. That’s how the algorithm works.

2. They’re probably a peer or colleague who follows you and stops scrolling when they see your name.

3. Or… they wish they were posting more, but they’re not, so they frame your consistency as “too much.” (It happens. Projection is real.)

So, if you’re getting noticed in someone’s 7-minute scroll window? 
Then I say: "Yay! People are FINALLY seeing you."

But I'm also going to tell you this: " Unless your ideal buyer is giving you this 'you're too much' feedback, then I highly recommend brushing it off."  

Because these people are not the ones paying your bills ...  Which means, their opinion of you is NONE of your business.

If you want leads, treat LinkedIn like a party, not a panel discussion
If you want people to commiserate with then, then keep doing the other thing.

I graduated medical school at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences with massive student debt and made a decision that shocked everyone.

Freedom is transformational!

I didn’t grow up with the “traditional” send-off to college. No road trip with family. No dorm room setup crew. No celebratory photos.

Just me…

Two suitcases…

On a Greyhound bus filled with strangers…

Hoping the future I dreamed of was waiting on the other side.

Back then, I didn’t realize that most students arrived with parents, siblings, and fanfare.

But when you come from a big family working hard to support many children, sometimes love looks like sacrifice.

That quiet bus ride taught me something that has shaped my entire life:

I can start alone and still finish strong.

And that’s why women like Bozoma Saint John Saint John Saint John inspire me to my core.

A woman who went from humble beginnings to shaping global marketing at PepsiCo, Uber, Apple, and Netflix.

A woman who shows us that your starting point has nothing to do with your ceiling.

A woman who turned her story, not her circumstances into her power!

Her journey reminds me that greatness often comes from the people who had to figure it out, carry their own suitcases, and walk into rooms without a guide.

So here’s my message to you:

Start where you are; greatness is built in motion not perfection!

I didn’t realize how loud $50,000 could sound, until I was about to hit “Send.” 🤭

My finger hovered over the button.

The screen stared back at me like it was asking, “Are you sure you want to do this?”

And in that moment, everything hit me at once! 🤭

✔️ Fear:

“What if this goes wrong?”

✔️ Courage:

“But what if this is the move that changes everything?”

✔️ Responsibility:

“You’ve worked too hard to be reckless.”

✔️ Ambition:

“Girl… this is the moment you’ve prayed for.”

No exaggeration, I stood up, walked away, came back, sat down, repeated.

Because $50K isn’t just money.

It’s sacrifices. Discipline. Missed outings.
Long nights.

It’s every version of me who fought to get here!

But then it clicked:

I wasn’t just sending money…

I was sending a message to myself.

“We’re done shrinking!”

“We’re done staying where it’s safe.”

“We’re done second-guessing our own capacity.”

So I took a deep breath.

Closed my eyes.

And hit SEND.

My heart dropped!

Full rollercoaster mode, but right after that came something unexpected:

Peace.

Like my future self whispered,

“You finally moved.”

And that single decision?

It changed the entire trajectory of my life.

It became the foundation of the work I do today, the investments I make, and the opportunities I now help others step into.

All because I gave myself permission to choose courage over comfort.

But the truth?

It was anything but straight.

❌️ I didn’t wake up one morning suddenly bold.

❌️ I didn’t magically know what to do.

For a long time, I was stuck in a loop:

Watch. Wonder. Wait. Repeat.

I watched other people win.

I wondered if I could ever do the same.

Spoiler:

I was in the middle of a shift when we got the news: the hospital had been acquired by private equity. Everything changed!

Up until that moment, the ER was my world, the energy, the rhythm, the purpose.

Running through hallways, high-fiving nurses, comforting the elderly, hugging babies…

It was a dance I had mastered and loved.

But after the acquisition, the atmosphere shifted.

📌 Shifts were cut.

📌 Decisions were made behind closed doors, and we were the last to know.

I never imagined our roles as physicians could be disposable.

That’s when it hit me: change is inevitable!

I knew I had to ask myself: how do I reclaim control over my career and future?

The answer: self-improvement. Education.

I began learning, exploring alternative investment opportunities, and discovered multifamily real estate investing, it was a game changer.

The first thing I learned? 

Education and awareness are essential!

To them, I was the only woman.
The only Black woman. The one who didn’t quite “fit.” But to me?...

It was the perfect room to walk into.

I walked into that boardroom and every head turned, not out of admiration, but because I wasn’t “expected” to be there.

And I felt it, the silent questions:

“Who is she?”
“What is she doing here?”
“Does she even know what she’s talking about?”

For a moment, I questioned myself too.

But then I remembered:

I didn’t build Pheenyx Capital Investment to shrink.

I didn’t close multi-million-dollar deals to apologize for taking up space.

Carla Harris said:

“People of color and women are under-leveraged.”

Mellody Hobson told us:

“The biggest risk is not taking one.”

And Thasunda Brown Duckett reminded us:

“I don’t want to be the only one. I want there to be hundreds who follow.”

Because representation shouldn’t be rare, it should be normal.

So I did what I came to do.

I spoke. Clear. Confident. Competent.

And the room listened!

Here’s the truth:

✔️ Your presence is power.
✔️ Your voice is valid.
✔️ Your seat at the table is earned.

Being a woman, a Black, immigrant woman, in business and real estate means you often feel like you’re proving yourself twice and representing thousands.

But being “the only one” isn’t a disadvantage.

It’s leverage.

It’s evidence that you’re operating at a level many didn’t imagine for you.

You don’t need permission.

You don’t need approval.

And you don’t need their table, you can build your own.

So next time you walk into a room and you’re the only one?

Don’t shrink. Don’t hesitate. Don’t apologize.

Walk in like you belong there.

Because you do.

And the more rooms we enter boldly, the more doors we open for those coming after us!

If I Could Tell My Younger Self in Residency (or Early in My Career): I know exactly what it feels like, long hours, sleepless nights, endless rounds, exams, and the pressure of becoming the physician you dreamed of. 

You’re giving everything, sacrificing sleep, social life, and sometimes even your health, all for the promise of a career that “pays off.”

And yes, medicine pays well. 

But here’s the truth nobody told me back then: 

your salary alone doesn’t guarantee freedom. 

Time freedom, financial freedom, and the ability to choose how you spend your life,  that doesn’t come automatically.

I wish I had known that loving your job doesn’t mean you have to depend solely on it.  

I’m not old yet, and I’m grateful I started building early, but I also know I could have started sooner. 

The good news? My experience doesn’t have to be yours.

You can learn from it and start creating options, freedom, and wealth alongside your caree, right now.

Here’s what I would tell my younger self:

 1️⃣ Start early, even in small ways

Even $50–$100 a month invested wisely compounds into real wealth over time. Don’t underestimate small steps during residency or fellowship. Every little bit counts.

 2️⃣ Learn about financial systems beyond your paycheck

Understand passive income, real estate, syndications, index funds, and other ways your money can work for you while you’re on shift. Knowledge is leverage and it grows exponentially if you start now.

 3️⃣ Protect your future time and energy

Build systems, create side projects, or explore investments that don’t require your constant presence. 

This isn’t about escaping medicine,  it’s about creating options: to travel, spend time with family, take a sabbatical, or pursue opportunities you genuinely care about.

4️⃣ Own your story, your schedule, and your future

Your career is powerful, but it shouldn’t be the only thing defining your life. 

You can still be an amazing physician and a wealth builder, a creator, or a business owner. The two can coexist, and they should.

Here’s the truth:

You don’t have to wait until retirement to live fully. 

You don’t have to wait until 60 to start building purpose, freedom, and generational wealth. 

Your career can fund it, but your choices determine it.

As a physician, I was convinced I wouldn’t have time for anything beyond medicine...

For years, my days were already spoken for; charts, rounds, patients, emergencies… repeat.

So social media?

Content creation?

Online presence?

I didn’t even see it as part of my world, lol...

But slowly, something started to shift.

I’d hear stories of people who met mentors online…

People who built opportunities from a single post…

And while the world was evolving, I was still stuck in the same routine: 

home, hospital, sleep, repeat, watching everything move forward without me.

The world rewards those who show up, will you?

There were times when it felt easier to pick up another shift in the ER than facing another “no.”

There were days when I questioned whether I was good enough, or if this whole journey was just a dream. 

If you’ve ever been on the verge of giving up, this story is for you.

I’ve had more no’s than yes’s in my journey. 

I think someone needs to hear this, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. 

For about a year and a half, we had no deals. No deals. 

We probably underwrote over 1,600 deals, and yet, it felt like nothing was coming through. 

We passed on many offers because we were holding out for something better.

And then… we made it.

Fast forward to today, and we are now managing over $120 million in property. 

It wasn’t easy. 

It wasn’t quick. 

But it was worth it. 

Every setback, every struggle, every time I doubted myself, it led us here. 

And if you’re feeling discouraged right now, just know that your breakthrough could be just around the corner.

You are not alone. 

We’ve all been there, but what separates those who make it from those who don’t is the decision to keep going. 

When the world tells you “no,” you say “not yet.”

I want to encourage you today: 

Don’t give up. 

Your next step, no matter how small it feels, is part of the bigger picture. 

The journey isn’t linear, but it’s still worth it.

This journey has taught me one thing: 

the moment you want to quit is often the exact moment the tide is turning.

Me? The introverted physician who once begged family members to comment on my posts… now teaching visibility on LinkedIn? Life is wild.

One platform I’m deeply grateful for in 2025? LinkedIn.

Because if you saw my early days on this app… 😭

You would understand why this gratitude runs deep.

I went from:
👉🏾 No likes

👉🏾 No comments

👉🏾 Sending “please just comment anything” messages to family

Literally trying to scrape 3–4 comments so I wouldn't look invisible. 😂

I almost gave up,  not because I didn’t believe in my message,
but because it felt like no one else did.

I’d write… rewrite… overthink…

Hit post…

And then?

❌ No engagement
❌ No traction
❌ Just silence

And that silence?

It messes with you.

You start questioning your story, your voice, your purpose.

But here’s what really shifted everything:

Instead of trying to “beat the algorithm,”
I started studying people and studying myself.

I stopped asking, “Why isn’t anyone engaging?”

and started asking,

“What am I truly saying… and why should anyone care?”

That question led me into a completely different season.

I put in real work:

I read books, listened to branding podcasts, watched videos on youtube, got mentored by people already doing it well

I practiced. Experimented. Refined my voice. Deleted drafts. Rewrote posts at midnight.

Lost weekends. Stretched myself.

And slowly… "I changed."

Not the algorithm; me!

I began writing with clarity, not confusion.

With conviction, not fear.

With purpose, not perfectionism.

And with that one shift, people started to notice.

They didn’t just like my posts, they connected with them.

They trusted me. And that trust opened doors.

Visibility isn’t luck. It’s clarity. It’s storytelling. It’s showing up with intention!

That shift turned 2025 into a year of:

✔️ Speaking invites
✔️ Podcasts
✔️Capital raised
✔️Partnerships
✔️ Life-changing connections

All from a platform I once thought wasn’t “working.”

If people don’t know what you do, can you really say you’re advancing, or just existing?

Pause on that for a second. Really sit with it.

I’ll use myself as an example.

✔️ I’m a physician.
✔️ I understand strategy and investments.
✔️ I speak, teach, coach, and mentor.
✔️ I build businesses and lead teams.

But if no one knew any of that about me…
How would I create the level of impact I want?
How would I hit my business goals?
How would I have a voice in the rooms that shape decisions?

I wouldn’t.

I’d just be quietly excellent and publicly invisible.

That’s the gap a lot of people are living in.

👉🏾You’re talented.
👉🏾You do the work.
👉🏾You solve real problems.

People’s lives and businesses are better because you showed up.

But outside of your immediate circle? Silence.

Now here’s the uncomfortable truth:

If you believe your work matters, hiding it isn’t humility, it’s a limitation.

You don’t have to become a walking billboard.

But you do have to become a clear, consistent narrator of your own story.

Because no one is coming to “discover” you.
No one will magically put language to your value.
No one will promote you with the same conviction you feel internally.

That’s your job.

You have to be willing to:
Say what you do clearly.
Show what you’ve done confidently.
Share what you know consistently.

Not because you love attention,

but because visibility is how your work travels further than your to-do list.

With all the talent, effort, and impact you’re already creating, do you truly believe the world is better off not knowing what you do?

When I look back at the biggest mistakes I’ve made, they all had one thing in common:

I rushed.
I trusted too quickly.
