My journey began in 2014 when I sought help from a consultancy, only to find myself doing most of the work despite paying them quite a bit.

This experience taught me the importance of genuine support in the application process.

In 2017, as a graduate student at the University of Michigan, I started assisting friends and other people with their applications through Facebook groups.

The results were incredible, and I received heartfelt thanks from those I helped.

This sparked a strong desire to help others achieve their academic dreams.

By 2021, I decided to dedicate myself full-time to mentoring prospective students.

Rubin Sagar

My first research stint started in 2016, at age 23, with a faculty from the University of Oxford. 

The project location: Madagascar. A remote study site you can reach after a local flight and 4 hours on a road built in the 1920s. 

Our project was a pilot study, with an original timeline of 3-4 years.

I thought it would be the project that helped me with my PhD applications. 

I started applying in 2017. Didn't work out. 

I continued my collaborations remotely. Learning along the way. 

I applied again in 2019. 

Still no paper, but we had a manuscript. The professor needed a medical break.

Nevertheless, the work helped me get an interview at the University of Cambridge. 

And an independent research grant. 

2020 came. The pandemic happened. PhD didn't work out again. 

I was told I need at least one first-author paper to be a strong candidate in certain places.

In 2021, I sent a few more PhD applications. Interviews happened, but no selection. I scrapped my PhD plans. 

But the paper was in the works. 

And finally! In 2022, our paper was published. Not a great journal, not a groundbreaking paper, but it was there. 

The one thing that I needed earlier. 

Oh btw, my second paper was also published in 2022 (project started and completed in 2021), haha!

Why am I sharing this? 

Sometimes, you start something that doesn't work out the way you hope. 

Maybe a research paper, maybe some other project. 

 Seeing that initiative through feels good. Even if it doesn't matter that much anymore. 

As students, you must dream big. Explore, start something new. 

But most importantly, have the grit to see it through. The destination might change, but the resilience you build stays with you forever.

First paper publication, email from my supervisor, a professor at the University of Oxford at the time. 

This resume/CV template is terrible. 

I think so. And so do recruiters and top universities globally. 

It's a very Indian thing. 

Readability matters. 

It's the same as creating a strong first impression.

For many opportunities, a resume/CV is just part of what a reader on the other side would want to see.

If you're thinking about master's programmes in 2027, now is the time to take profile-building seriously. 

10 proven profile-building ideas for scholarships and admission into top universities (applicable to a wide range of applicants).

Many applications across the world will open ~6-12 months from now (timelies vary globally).

1. If you can, improve your GPA. This is often the most important aspect.

2. For research programs, focus on relevant, contemporary research skills.

3. Aim for reputed peer-reviewed journals and reputed international conferences. 

4. Look into small independent grants to support a research idea. 

5. If you're in a full-time job, take initiative and focus on leadership opportunities. Promotions are good!

6. Any kind of international exposure counts. Volunteer with a research group, collaboration with teams abroad within your organization, summer exchanges, internships, fellowships, etc. 

7. Professionally relevant and internationally recognised credentials (CFA, licenses, certifications, etc.) (Not online courses)

8. Focusing on strong GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores

9. Freelancing, volunteering opportunities and internships that are academically or professionally aligned with your goals. 

10. Teaching formally, especially within your field of study.

A PhD interview for my mentee with a leading professor! 

They applied twice previously. And this year my guidance seemed to have worked.

When I first reviewed their application, there were several missing elements. 

CV was all over the place. 

Statements lacked structure. 

They tried to pack in everything, everywhere. 

That's exactly what I helped them with. 

A more structured, targeted and evaulative approach.

Typically, answering these we'll get you way ahead of most others.

The biggest mistake you can make as a student & prospective master'/PhD applicant: 

Getting research papers ghostwritten, and paying thousands or lakhs for it. 

I once worked with a candidate who paid INR 100,000+ to get a paper done by a popular service, under the garb of  research 'bootcamps' 

Long story short, it was a bad experience for him. Neither did he learn nor get a paper that matched his past experience/interests. 

The 'bootcamp' folks promised something and did something else. 

I found out about all this long after I started working with this candidate.

Fake research is not profile-building. 

Take ownership of your research. 

It may not be very high quality.

Even if takes longer. 

But it's your work.

Your experience.

That matters the most.
