As a Family Case Manager, I managed between 12 to 15 cases of families. My primary goal was to make sure the children are safe. I accomplished this by visiting each child at least once a month and making sure each child had their basic needs met. I investigated abuse claims. The claims covered all forms of abuse: neglect, substance, sexual abuse, mental health, domestic violence. I investigated by talking to different sources, including parents, school officials, children, and other family members, to determine whether the abuse claims are true. 
Most of the children on my case load have already been separated from their parents. I tried to preserve the families by connecting the families with services they need to help them overcome the challenges they are facing. Through the case, I lead team meetings to establish goals the family needed to complete to achieve permanency. At these meetings, I also distributed tasks for each team member to complete.
Another role in the job included going to court. I also drafted legal documents including court reports and affidavits to update the court about a family's or child's progress. I needed to complete the court reports every three months. I went to court hearings and learned many of the skills of a litigation paralegal.
If the parents were not able to achieve permanency, DCS took the parents to court to terminate their parental rights. To make sure the child had permanency, I had to find foster and adoptive homes for children. 
The most difficult part of the job was handling volatile, emotional situations. The families of the DCS children are in turmoil. Parents are angry and ashamed. Most children do not want to be away from their mothers and fathers. The goal is to listen to what the families are saying, learn the root of their challenges, and try to find resources to overcome those challenges.

For about three years, I worked at the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center, spearheading social media and publicity campaigns for over a dozen departments and thousands of faculty and students. I have edited and written nearly all the social media content for the center’s Facebook page and Web site.  I sent a weekly, online newsletter to the faculty as well. I have worked with adding video to the content and taking video as well.  During my first two years, I worked under the title of graduate assistant. During my third year, I was promoted to executive assist. Also, during my last year, I also wrote the content for the center's annual budget.

I started out as a reporter. Then,  turned to social work. Now, I do a combination of both. This just means I can provide you with more expertise and more heart.

Social media is another skill. For more than three years, I managed social media accounts. I can draw in community members to participate in online conversations and increase visitor traffic.

I became a reporter after graduating (2004) and covered a variety of topics, from education to city government. In 2006, I delved into community reporting as a mobile journalist in California. With a camera and cell phone in hand, I recorded the stories of the Cathedral City residents. Later, as an educational reporter for Cathedral City, I visited classrooms, talked to teachers, questioned school administrators for my articles. There is nothing like the rush of writing on deadline, knowing your story will be in the paper the following day.

In February 2010, I took a hiatus and returned to school. In 2012 I became a social worker, working for multiple nonprofits.

I discovered my experiences strengthened my writing. I also became a passionate social advocate who could write persuasive essays on a variety of social issues. I can use my writing to give more voice to marginalized populations.

In addition, I learn quickly. I always welcome additional training.
