Most Amazon sellers treat returns like a cost of doing business.

Ship it out. 
Hope they like it. 
If it comes back? 
Write it off and move on.

But when you actually look at the numbers, the "move on" approach is quietly bleeding you dry.

Returned inventory gets sent back to FBA, re-graded by Amazon (generously speaking), and either goes back on the shelf in questionable condition or disappears into the removal void.

Something people forget about Amazon sellers:

This isn't a side hustle for most of them. This is how they pay their mortgage. This is how they feed their kids. This is their entire livelihood wrapped up in a listing and a star rating.

So when a competitor comes in and tanks that rating with fake reviews... they're not just hurting a business metric. They're messing with someone's ability to put food on the table.

I take that very personally.

I've talked to sellers who said they left Amazon entirely because they were getting attacked and couldn't stop it. Couldn't figure out how to get the reviews removed. The platform wasn't responding. And eventually they just gave up.

That's someone's dream dying because another company decided to play dirty.

Doesn't sit right with me. It never has. 

And it's a big part of why I wake up every day and do what I do at TraceFuse.

A 5-star review could hurt your sales...

Somebody writes: "I really love this watch I bought, but honestly my favorite watches are from this other brand."

Sounds harmless. 

But every person who reads that now knows about your competitor. 

Some will go look. 
Some will buy. 
You just funded their marketing with your own listing.

And who you think wrote that review? Your competitor. They just made it 5-stars so its harder to notice foul play.

Amazon knows this. 
Mentioning competitors in a review violates their guidelines. 
But these slip through constantly because they look positive on the surface.

Same with pricing. "Bought this on Prime Day for $30, now it's $45." Every future buyer who reads that is waiting for the next sale.

Or shipping complaints framed as product reviews. "Arrived two weeks late. Terrible." That's an Amazon fulfillment issue, not a product problem. But it drags your rating down just the same.

All of these are removable (not because they're negative, but because they violate Amazon's own community guidelines). Most sellers have no idea these categories exist.

I've started businesses that made me nothing for months. My wife never flinched.

She was a nurse. 
Steady paycheck. 
Health insurance through the hospital. 
Predictable income every two weeks. 

And I was the guy coming home saying, "Hey, I found this land in Mexico. We should buy it."

She'd look at me and say, "We're not buying land in Mexico right now."

And that dynamic is the thing almost nobody talks about when they tell their entrepreneurship story. 

They talk about the grind. 
The late nights. 
The breakthrough moment. 

They don't talk about the person standing next to them absorbing the financial risk while they figured it out.

I was the risk taker.

That doesn't make me less of an entrepreneur. It makes me an honest one.

If you're building something right now and you've got a partner with a stable income, that's not a crutch. That's a strategic advantage. One person swings for the fences. The other keeps the baseline secure. And when the risk pays off, everybody wins.

I'm not saying you need that setup to succeed. Plenty of people go all-in solo and make it work. 

But if you have it, don't downplay it. Acknowledge it. 

That stability is what gives you the room to take the kinds of risks that actually build something.

A customer wrote: "Worst product I've ever bought."

The reason? It arrived four days late.

Not broken. 
Not defective. 
Not the wrong item. 

Late.

And if you're using FBA, that's not even your fault...

But guess where that 1-star review lands? On YOUR listing. On YOUR product. Dragging YOUR conversion rate down.

This is one of the most common (and most fixable) problems I see Amazon sellers just… live with.

They read the review, get frustrated, and move on. But that review is a product review about a shipping problem. And Amazon's own terms of service make a distinction between the two.

The issue is most sellers don't know how to file the case correctly. They submit a generic request, get a canned response, and assume nothing can be done.

We've removed over 16,000 reviews across 700+ brands. A huge chunk of those were exactly this (shipping complaints disguised as product reviews).

The difference between getting them removed and getting ignored comes down to knowing which department to file with, what language to use, and (this is the big one) how long to wait before following up.

Most sellers torpedo their own cases by asking for updates every 48 hours. Amazon could potentially blacklist you for that.

Patience isn't just a virtue here. It's a strategy.

Losing one-tenth of a star can cut your sales in HALF.

That's the difference between a 4.3 and a 4.2 on Amazon. Sounds like nothing.

Except Amazon doesn't display exact ratings to shoppers. It rounds to the nearest half star. 

A 4.3 gets rounded up and displayed as 4.5 stars. A 4.2 gets rounded down and displayed as 4.0 stars.

So that tiny 0.1 drop? To every customer scrolling through search results, your product just lost half a star overnight. 

You went from looking like a 4.5-star product to a 4-star product (and most shoppers will never click deep enough to see the actual number).

That visual cliff is why a 4.3 to 4.2 drop can tank sales 10 to 50%. The optics kill you.

And it compounds fast. 

Lower visible rating → fewer clicks → fewer sales → lower BSR → less visibility → even fewer sales. 

One bad week of reviews can start a spiral that takes months to climb out of.

This is why I tell sellers to be proactive. 

Most come to us after their rating has already slipped past the cliff. It's like installing a car alarm after someone's already broken in.

We monitor reviews daily across 700 brands specifically to catch problems before they push a listing over one of these rounding thresholds. 

One review caught early can be the difference between staying at 4.5 stars and dropping to 4.0 in the eyes of every shopper on Amazon.

Then I send it over with a note: "Figured this out in about five minutes. You can fix all of this yourself, here's how. Or if you want a hand, happy to chat."

That's it.

No pitch deck. No "let's hop on a 30 minute call." No pressure. Just value delivered before they ever asked for it.

And the response rate is wildly different from a standard cold email. Because I just showed them I actually looked at their business. I didn't copy-paste their company name into a template. I gave them something useful for free and let them decide what to do with it.

Most cold outreach fails because it leads with what you do. Nobody cares what you do. They care what you can do for them. 

And the fastest way to prove that is to just… do it. Show them. Give them something they can act on immediately.

A 60-second video where you demonstrate competence will outperform a thousand "just checking in" follow-ups.

A company came to us with what sounded like a normal request.

"We just need to clean up some reviews so we can sell through our remaining inventory."

Then they told us the products were toxic. And it wasn't like they were just being precautious... the lab results were already in.

And I'd think, "Man, it's so hard to find people who just get it."

It's like people who say their dog is badly behaved. Nine times out of ten, it's not the dog... it's the owner. 

The dog never got trained properly. The signals were inconsistent. And now everyone's frustrated and pointing fingers at the one who had the least information to work with.

Same thing happens in business every single day.

You hire a VA and expect them to read your mind. You bring on a marketing person and give them a one-paragraph brief on a complex campaign. You onboard a new team member with a 20-minute walkthrough and wonder why they're making mistakes three weeks later.

The fix wasn't finding better people. The fix was becoming a better trainer.

Now I record everything. Every process, every walkthrough, every expectation. It's all documented on video. 

My team can reference it anytime. They take notes. AI pulls the key points.

This is a rite of passage for most eCom founders:

Someone leaves a 1-star review on your product.

You read it. It says something like "took two weeks to arrive and the box was damaged."

It has nothing to do with the product. That's shipping and fulfillment feedback. And according to Amazon's own guidelines, it doesn't belong on your product listing.

Amazon explicitly states that feedback about sellers, orders, or shipping should go in seller feedback... not the product review section.

But here's the problem. 

These reviews still get posted. 
They still count toward your average rating. 
They still show up when a potential customer is deciding whether to buy your product.

And a lot of sellers don't realize they can actually report these for removal.

Same goes for reviews that contain profanity, external links, promotional content for competing products, or personal information. All of these violate Amazon's review guidelines. All of them are eligible for removal.

The issue is that most sellers never audit their reviews closely enough to catch them. They see a 1-star review, feel frustrated, and move on. Meanwhile, that policy-violating review is dragging their conversion rate down every single day.

Amazon stopped prepping your products for you on January 1st.

In college, somebody offered me a free shirt if I signed up for a Visa card.

I grabbed that card and maxed it out the same week. 

New jacket. 
Some gear. 
Felt like free money. 

The minimum payment was $15 a month, so I figured I was set.

I paid that $15 a month for about nine years.

A jacket I bought for $500 probably cost me close to $2,000 by the time I was done. 

And I didn't even realize it was happening until my credit score tanked and a car dealership told me I didn't qualify for financing.

That was my financial literacy education. 

Not a class. 
Not a book. 

A decade of compound interest working against me while I thought I was being responsible because I never missed a minimum payment.

Nobody in my family sat me down and explained how credit actually works. 

They mentioned credit cards exist. 

They didn't explain what a 22% APR does to a $500 balance over nine years. 

I had to learn that by living it.

And I see the same pattern with business owners all the time. 

They'll bootstrap a company, grind for years, make real revenue... and still not understand where their money is actually going. 

They're making decisions based on what feels right instead of what the numbers say.

I was that guy. I thought if I didn't "spend" money, I was winning. Meanwhile I was hemorrhaging time, paying interest I didn't need to pay, and avoiding hiring help that would've paid for itself ten times over.

Financial literacy isn't glamorous. 

It's not content that goes viral. 

But it's the difference between building something that lasts and building something that looks good until you check the bank account.

I've sat down with someone and said "what do you actually want?" and then helped them go get it.

Because if someone's sitting in a seat they don't want to be in, that's not good for them and it's not good for us.

The old-school mentality is that when someone wants to leave, you take it personally. You get cold. You make their last few weeks uncomfortable. 

All that does is confirm they made the right decision.

I'd rather be the person who says "I get it. Let's figure out your next move together" than the person they tell horror stories about for the next five years.

No job is permanent. 

Buses have stops. 

And the best thing you can do as a leader is make sure people remember the ride fondly.

A QR code on a card inside your product packaging. That's it. 

That's one of the most effective list-building tools an Amazon seller has.

Treat it like customer support, not marketing. "Scan here to register your warranty and get your setup guide." 

The customer gets something useful. You get an email address and a direct line to someone who already bought your product.

No TOS violations or shady tactics. Just a value exchange that makes sense to both sides.

The sellers who do this well think about the insert like a product experience, not an afterthought. 

One clear message. 
One QR code.
One action. 
Professional design that matches the brand. 

If it looks like a flyer from a college bulletin board, nobody's scanning it.

And what you do with that email address after matters more than collecting it. 

A setup guide that prevents the confused one-star review. 
A care instructions email that reduces returns. 
A cross-sell recommendation 30 days later that feels like a helpful suggestion, not a sales pitch.

That's how you start building an audience nobody can take away from you.
