Way of Life - access control app onboarding screens

I knew two co-founders who used their life's savings.

They later raised $15M+.

3 years later, they were listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Then sold their clients to AJ Bell and exited.

They risked it all.

Today, I'm seeing loads of people build SaaS platforms and mobile apps at lightning speed.

But here's what's blindsiding them (they just don't know it yet!).

Because it's fast and affordable, there's ZERO commitment to the idea.

Doesn't work? Start again.
Clunky UX? Keep prompting AI.
Terrible UI? Copy and paste references.
No one wants it? Move on, build something else.

I'm seeing the same patterns.

The problem isn't the tools.

👉 The problem is your approach.

You're building 'things' instead of solutions that solve BIG problems.

Problems people will actually pay you for.

You're skipping validation in favour of prompting.

And you're wasting your time and money going round in circles.

Speed feels productive.

But without proper validation, you're just creating noise.

Focus on solving real problems first.

Then build.

I made A LOT of mistakes during my early career as a designer.

The worst mistake?

Using fake tan!

Jk, that's just my natural Mediterranean glow 😂

Joke aside. It's not understanding business.

And where design impacts the most.

I thought great design alone would win.

It doesn't.

- Beautiful UI means nothing if it doesn't drive revenue
- Stakeholders care about ROI, not your Dribbble shots
- Design without strategy is just decoration

The turning point?

When I started asking business questions:

– What's the cost of this problem?
– How does this impact conversion?
– Will this move the needle on retention?

That's when I had my own 'aha' moment.

Suddenly, everything clicked.

Now I approach every project differently:

– Speak the language of metrics
– Understand the business model first
– Align design decisions with revenue goals

You're not hired to make things pretty.

You're hired to solve business problems through design.

Building a SaaS today is piss easy 💀

The real challenge is what else no one tells you.

What you build, how you build it, who and why.

That's what separates the wheat from the chaff, my people.

And that's what separates 'Meh!' from 'Aha!'.

If I were launching a product today, I'd only focus on these three things 👇

1️⃣ Talking to users, understanding their pains
Not just surveys or analytics. Real conversations. Get on calls, watch them use your product, and understand what keeps them up at night.

2️⃣ Refining the product's UX
Understanding your users' pains is half the story. It's how you go about delivering the solution, and almost no one gets this right without user research and testing (true story).

3️⃣ Defining my GTM strategy
Who are you selling to? Where do they hang out? What's your message? Without clarity here, you're just shouting into the void.

💡 Deeply understanding your market and delivering an experience people actually want to pay for gets you to £1M+ ARR.

Most founders get stuck building what they think their users want.

I call it the founder-ego trap.

Here's what happens:

You've got this brilliant vision in your head.

But you're building for yourself, not your actual users.

The warning signs of founder bias are obvious:

👉 You ignore contradictory feedback
👉 You prioritise your favourite features
👉 You build based on gut feeling
👉 You assume you know best
👉 You skip user research

I hate to say it, but your assumptions are probably wrong.

I've designed and built over 200+ apps in 20 years, and 9/10 of them fail.

Not because of the execution of the idea.

But because you've skipped validation.

What successful founders do instead:

✅ Put ego aside
✅ Test assumptions early
✅ Talk to customers constantly
✅ Validate before building anything
✅ Embrace uncomfortable feedback

I've seen too many brilliant founders waste months building products their users don't actually need.

Get out of your own head and into your users' world.

Stop building what YOU want.
Start building what THEY need.

Outcomes which are transparent and measurable.

Managed a multi-skilled centralised IT Support and development team for the DPH Group of companies, comprising of software engineers, database developers, business analysts, system administrators and graphic designers.

adam (HTT)

Adam uses innovative technology, to help our customers re-design their processes, and their organisations by putting people back at the heart of what they do. Adam specialise in Micro commissioning, Procurement, Supply chain management, Social Care Technology, Public Sector, and NHS Commissioning.

Oversaw the development of the core Sproc.net platform and the Case Management product, as well as provided strategic direction for the management team.

Attigo Training

ATTIGO were a training company who's aim was to empower older people to continue seeking knowledge in a self-motivated and self-directed environment, whilst allowing them to achieve their own goals.  ATTIGO utilised a combination of in person and web based training to deliver training content to their client base.

Oversaw the development of the ATTIGO e-learning web application and provided strategic direction for the management team.

Matrix SCM

Matrix-SCM is a supply chain management company that provides its clients with a sophisticated web-based technology platform to automate the purchasing of complex services.

After organisational changes within the DPH group, moved into a less hands on role and assisted with the creation of a new dedicated IT team within Matrix-SCM.

Matrix-SCM is a supply chain management company that provides its clients with a sophisticated web-based technology platform to automate the purchasing of complex services.

Oversaw the development of the Matrix-CR.net platform, new infrastructure and reporting suites.  Managed a multi-skilled team of software engineers, database developers, system administrators and graphic designers.

Responsible for leading a team of software engineers during the creation of a new web based transactional application using the Agile methodology. Main activities:

•	Lead team of Software Engineers (management, training etc).

Comensura is a business process outsourcing company that buys recruitment services, then manages the service providers, streamlining the engagement process through the smart application of people, process and technology. Comensura does this effectively because they are not part of the supply chain.

The Comensura software development team were responsible for the ongoing support and continued development of Comensura.net and all IT within the Comensura business.  In 2007 Comensura successfully moved it’s server hosting from Houston USA to Reading in the UK, created and deployed demonstration websites for new business ventures (USA, Europe & Australia) and began construction of a new application (Comensura.net version 4).

•	Write Visual Basic extensions to implement business logic on Comensua.net version 3.
•	Upgrade of production database from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005.
•	Upgrade and re-design of Comensura.net to create Comensura.net version 4.
•	Conversion of Visual Basic extensions to C# for use by Comensura.net version 4.
•	Creation of customized excel template files for use by clients to input/upload timesheets
•	Large scale data analysis of current database to remove legacy data not needed by Comensura.net version 4.
•	Main Comensura contact for all IT related issues.
•	Build, test and deployment of demo applications for use in Client training sessions.
•	Requirement gathering from non-technical staff for use in developing new functionality.

Electronic Data Systems was a $multi-billion  international  operating  in  sixty  countries,  providing  business  and technology solutions  -  corporate  strategy  development,   customer  relationship management, HR and business process outsourcing services.

London Transport Account:

The London Transport account supported a 17-year £1 billion contract awarded by London Transport (LT) under the British government's Private Finance Initiative to design, install, and operate the new integrated fare collection system on London Underground and buses.  The system comprised of over 16,500 remote ticketing devices (RTDs), of which 7000 are installed at station gates, passenger-operated machines, ticket office machines, and validators used throughout London Underground. A total of 449 multi-lingual touch screen ticket-issuing machines were also installed across the network.

Main Activities:

•	Write SQL scripts and stored procedures to make large scale updates to the live system.
•	Using SQL Enterprise Manager to interrogate the database.
•	Create DTS Packages to import external data onto the live system.
•	Large scale data migration of denormalised data to a normalised database.
•	Evaluation of customer requirements.
•	Create Visual Basic applications as a user interface to run SQL stored procedures.
•	Amend and maintain existing Visual Basic tool-set to reduce run-time of fares revision processes.
•	Manual updates of the live database for small scale configuration changes.
•	Create .NET applications to enable the team to perform remedial tasks at the push of a button.

Software Developer

Electronic Data Systems was a $multi-billion  international  operating  in  sixty  countries,  providing  business  and technology solutions  -  corporate  strategy  development,   customer  relationship management, HR and business process outsourcing services.

GM & DWP Accounts:

General Motors Corp, who at the time were the world’s largest automaker, had been the global industry sales leader since 1931. Founded in 1908, GM at the time employed about 317,000 people around the world. It had manufacturing operations in 32 countries and its vehicles were sold in 200 countries. In 2004, GM sold nearly 9 million cars and trucks globally.

EDS were responsible for the development and support of a variety mainframe applications for their Vauxhall Sales and Marketing client, adhering to system life cycle (SLCE) guidelines and processes.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is there to promote opportunity and independence for all through modern, customer-focused services.  The DWP helps people to achieve their potential through employment, so that they are able to provide for their children and to work and save for secure retirement.

EDS developed major enhancements to the Carer’s Allowance system for the DWP and provided post-development support.  In doing so we transitioned work from Blackpool to Luton.

Main Activities:

•	Client consultations, interpreting objectives and formulating phased implementation schedules.
•	Define  & Analyse requirements.
•	Design and construct system components using COBOL, JCL, Easytrieve & DB2.
•	Creation of test plans to follow during testing.
•	Implementation of system components following change control review.

Vauxhall UK Account:

Vauxhall Systems Support help-desk was the first point of contact for all of the dealerships, plants and part warehouses within the UK.  Over 200 calls came in every day with an average of 60 cases being passed on to second line to resolve each week.

Main activities included:

•	Data analysis and customer support.
•	Solving complex technical issues.
•	Minor code changes.

2nd & 3rd Line Support
