Things I learnt working at a Y Combinator- backed startup at 20

Working here taught me very quickly that startups don’t care about age, titles, or how “smart” you think you are - they care about how fast you execute. Despite being the youngest in the room, I still got the chance to own GTM execution and even the sales side, which forced me to level up way faster than I planned. 

Funny enough, it helped me build soft skills way more than hard ones - reading people, asking better questions, managing pressure, negotiating, writing clearly, and not panicking when things break (because they always do).

I realised ideas mean nothing if you can’t ship by tonight, and half of “sales” is just understanding human psychology better than the next person. I learnt to write clearly, think independently, ask sharper questions, and take ownership without waiting for instructions.

And honestly, the biggest learning?

When you’re thrown into a high-speed environment, you either adapt fast… or you get left behind.

I chose to adapt - aggressively.

Everyone talks about “skills” in business - strategy, GTM, sales, execution.

But nobody tells you the truth: half of business runs on relationships, not resumes.

Working at startups made this painfully clear.

You can have the best product, the best pitch, the best plan…
But if people don’t trust you, nothing moves.

Partnerships happen because someone remembered a small detail.

Opportunities open because someone felt you actually cared - not because you had a perfect pitch.

And the funny part?

Relationship building isn’t a “skill” they teach you anywhere.

It comes from the smallest habits:
• Following up even when there's no agenda
• Being the person who delivers early
• Keeping your word (even when it’s inconvenient)
• Treating everyone - interns to CXOs - with the same respect

Startups run at insane speed. You don’t have weeks to convince someone.
You have minutes. Be it customer, your intern, your boss, anyone.

And in those minutes, your reputation does more talking than your slides.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned at 20, it’s this:

Relationships compound faster than revenue - and fundraise more than pitch decks ever will.

Build them intentionally.

Protect them carefully.

And never underestimate how far one good connection can take you. I feel working on soft skills, basic communication, opened more doors for me than hard technical skills, while those are really crucial too.

Not all perfect hooks are perfect!!

You know one thing I noticed

We all focus on the perfect hook
The perfect hook that catches viewer attention
Which attracts engagement
Which attracts impressions and people

And within that process of finding perfect hook, we sometimes over exaggerate some so simple things which might make people feel like “oh wow this person is doin so much” 

But this is not the actual truth

Like for reference, I posted yesterday how I worked at a Y Combinator startup at 20- what a perfect hook, right !??

But in reality, for me I don't feel so special by it, it's normal, other people my age are also doing great. I actually feel inferior despite all of this, so next time you read a post based on the hook, just know a person might have written it and it might be true but it's not that serious, it's okay, it's normal

Understand the psychology behind it, not jump to conclusions of how maybe you are lacking behind, because at the end whatever we do we are always going to feel as a person we are lacking behind and doing less, when we achieve one thing, the next milestone instantly appears with no waiting period and there is nothing wrong with that, 

because if it doesn't then that's something you should be concerned about!!
